First event of the year as Women's Soccer hosts Arkansas at 7:30pm EDT on ESPN3 Friday. The start time depends on the conclusion of the other game of the tournament. Unlike one of the teams in that game, whose tournament a few miles down the road we played in a few weekends ago, we are letting both games air on ESPN3.

Women's Soccer takes on Penn State on ESPN3 on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30pm EDT, but that could be pushed back if our noisy neighbors (who we have charitably allowed to be shown on ESPN3 as well) need a golden goal to end their game again.

Men's Soccer will travel to Louisville to help them open their ACC tenure. The game is being streamed by the NSCAA via their UStream channel at 7:30pm EDT:
http://www.nscaatv.com/091314--louisville-vs--duke

I realized that I missed a broadcast that fit my criteria (conference and not school-controlled and free) when I did not mention the volleyball game being streamed by the Pac 12 yesterday. I must not be in midseason form yet. Am I obligated to commit Seppuku for this oversight?

Does anyone have a sense why our men's soccer team has descended into such as a state of mediocrity on the field? Given the school's historical success, the strength of the ACC and the nature of the sport, it seems like a sport in which we should excel. Instead we are finishing in the lower half of the ACC and struggling to stay relevant nationally (unranked again this year).

John Rennie won the school it's first national championship and built a powerhouse in the 80's and 90's...the program had declined somewhat in his later years and I was thrilled when John Kerr (a Duke legend) returned from Harvard to coach the program. Unfortunately, in spite of some great individual players, the team just hasn't come together the past few years.

I should note this refers to their performance on the field only. Quick glance shows the highest number of ACC Honor Rolls awards last year...obviously the most important thing.

I lived with a number of soccer players while at Duke and loved attending the games while at school. We had some great nights and teams in the late 80's and early 90's including one of the most extraordinary games I have ever seen. Duke's Brian Benedict scored a goal from 40 yards out to win?/tie? against UNC with 6 seconds left in the game. The crowd exploded and rushed the field. I'd love to see the team recapture some of that magic and return to form in the ACC.

Well we did come back to win today so maybe this is the springboard to something new.

I think the issue is the emergence of professional options for American players, both in this country and abroad (especially the Nordic countries). Players at the level you need to compete in the ACC and nationally have reasonable expectations of eventually playing professionally and are looking for immediate playing time and programs that have a track record. Now that many top players are coming through the MLS academy system, that adds a whole new level of recruiting for the top players. Many of Duke's most successful recent players were ones whose parents insisted that they get their college degree before playing professionally. It is also hard to recruit depth at private schools because a lot of players would rather take similar sized partial scholarships at public schools.

awhom111
11-05-2014, 09:42 PM
Duke host the ACC Field Hockey Championship this weekend. Unfortunately, they got the lowest seed and face the second seeded team, some local degree-gifting entity. It will be on ESPN3 at 1:30pm EDT assuming the prior game does not run obscenely long. Oddly enough, Duke is the seventh place team in the conference while being seventh in the RPI and seventh in coaches poll (they were actually sixth at the conclusion of conference play.

With any luck, the ACC will announced their full spring sports schedule sometime this week. ESPN has released both of their lacrosse schedules, which feature both Duke teams:
http://espnmediazone.com/us/press-releases/2015/02/2015-espnu-espn3-lacrosse-schedule-features-28-mens-womens-nationally-ranked-programs/

I will probably make a Duke-only list when the full ACC schedule is out, but I figured a heads up now would be good with Men's Lacrosse on Sunday.

awhom111
02-06-2015, 09:57 PM

Also of note, Elon is streaming the Women's opener at 1:00pm ET tomorrow. I normally only advertise TV channels and conference-sponsored free streaming, but this matchup is a special occasion.

There is plenty of Duke action tomorrow when it comes to NCAA competition.

Three wrestlers advanced to the second day of the NCAA Championships. Conner Hartman picked up two wins at 197. Marcus Cain at 149 and Immanuel Kerr-Brown at 157 continue to take the long path in wrestlebacks. Coverage of every single mat continues on ESPN3 with the morning session starting at 11:00am EDT and the night session at 8:00pm EDT. ESPNU coverage in the morning is supposed to run from 11 to 2 and ESPN coverage at night runs from 8 to 11. Again, the best way of figuring out which mat to focus on is to follow Duke social media.

Leah Goldman and Isabella Paez compete in the 100m Butterfly at the Women's Swimming Championships.
Prelims start at 11:00am EDT and can be seen here:
http://www.gopack.com/collegesportslive/?DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=4200&media=490198
Finals would be on ESPN3 at 7:00pm EDT.

It may actually be impossible for a Duke fencer to qualify at this point even with a few rounds of round-robin to go, but ESPN3 coverage of the NCAA Women's Fencing championship starts at 1:30pm Sunday.

Men's Lacrosse visits Syracuse on Sunday at 12:30pm EDT and can be seen on ESPNU.

awhom111
03-26-2015, 10:01 PM
Duke Men's Swimming competes at the NCAA Championships. Tomorrow, the 200 Medley Relay team opens action and Peter Kropp competes in the 100 Backstroke. I just remembered that college uses yards and not meters, which means my posts from last week are wrong.

Finals are on ESPN3 at 8:00pm EDT.

Baseball's series at Clemson will be on ESPN3. Friday's game is at 6:30pm ET.

Women's Lacrosse plays some team at 7:00pm ET on ESPN3 for those who cannot make it to Koskinen for one of the bigger rivalry games in a while. I hope the refs are ready for stick checks since you never know what they will do to cheat. Of course, if we keep them from scoring, stick checks will not be needed. I should put that on the list of proposed sanctions: Men's Lacrosse must use sticks that would be legal in Women's Lacrosse.

ESPN3 also lists the ACC Women's Golf Championship at 3:00pm ET. Every other source I have says that they are not supposed to start coverage until Saturday, so if there is nothing actually showing tomorrow, I would not be surprised.

It turns out that golf was being shown because of a schedule change with rain expected Sunday. They are playing 27 holes today and 27 holes tomorrow.

Rain in the area is affecting other sports too as baseball will be a double header tomorrow.

Full times and schedules for those and other sports will be posted later.

Tomorrow is loaded with Duke events.

Men's Lacrosse faces Marquette at 2:00pm ET on CBS Sports Network.

Baseball did not play today so they hope to get a game in on Sunday in addition to tomorrow's doubleheader. ESPN3 coverage starts at 12:00pm ET with the second game shortly after the first.

Women's Golf has a bit of a mountain to climb to catch a Virginia team that did well in the first half of the tournament. The team is looking for their fourth consecutive ACC title. ESPN3 coverage starts at 4:30pm ET.

Men's Tennis starts the ACC tournament at 12:00pm ET tomorrow against Miami. This cannot actually be seen except in person, but I bring it up every time this year because I find it unbelievable in this day and age that the ACC cannot get all the courts streamed and has barely useful live stats. If the facilities in Cary cannot handle it, they should really hold it somewhere else.

A game that you should be able to see is the Women's Lacrosse ACC Quarterfinal against Louisville at 4:00pm ET. It is being shown on these RSNs, but I would double check your local listings, especially for the supposedly tape delayed showings:
http://www.theacc.com/news/rsn-coverage-for-accwlax-evening-quarterfinals-04-23-2015
If you get one of those RSNs, but are not in their general area, you should still be able to see it unrestricted. If you have online access to one of the channels, that is also an option.

It is also on ESPN3, possibly subject to blackout in the ACC footprint, but ESPN has not provided a map and I do not anticipate them providing one.

There is plenty of action on Friday.

Men's Tennis faces their nearest ACC foes in the conference quarterfinals at 12:00pm ET and Women's Tennis starts their ACC Tournament in the quarterfinals against Georgia Tech at 3:00pm ET. Of course we can't actually watch them without being in Cary because of the ACC.

Women's Lacrosse faces Syracuse in an ACC semifinal. Game time is listed at 3:00pm ET, but it will likely be later than that because of the first semifinal. The game will be on these RSNs, but I would always double check local listings:
http://www.theacc.com/news/rsn-coverage-for-accwlax-semifinals-04-24-2015
It will be online on ESPN3 (possibly subject to blackout in unknown areas) or if you can watch an RSN you subscribe to via their online service.

Men's Lacrosse faces Notre Dame to start the ACC Tournament at 5:30pm ET on ESPNU.

Baseball faces Virginia Tech at 6:00pm ET on ESPN3.

Baseball needs to finish the second game with Virginia Tech before starting the third. Action starts at 1:00pm ET on ESPN3.

I'm a bit surprised the Duke women earned such a high seed, given that they limped into the end of the season with three losses in their last four games. Undoubtedly they were helped by their strong record from earlier in the season, and hopefully the bye and the first game at home against what should be a relatively beatable opponent will help them clean things up going into the later rounds.

Duke would need to have all the other teams still on course to come back tomorrow with all of their golfers playing at my skill level to qualify for the next round, but Jake Shuman does have a shot at playing one more round as an individual. The same weather havoc as last week has returned, so who knows when third rounds will finish and teams and individuals advancing will be determined. I dunno if anything good happened for Duke at the NCAA Track and Field Championship, but Thursday was awful for our pole vaulters, as Megan Clark, who was second at the NCAA Indoors and ACC outdoor champion, failed to make the opening height. Neither did freshman qualifier Madison Heath.

Besides the pole vault on Thursday, Maslowski also had to pull out of the heptathlon. On Wednesday, Lang set a Duke record and Maslowski was at least competing. Today, Brand did at least get to complete her event.
