Why not have another thread?

There are plenty of other international events this summer, including youth tournaments and qualifying for future tournaments, including the 2016 Olympics.

Over the weekend, the 2014 South Asian Championship was finished with India beating out the other four teams in round robin play. As a result, they qualify for the 2014 FIBA Asia Cup in two months. That tournament will send its winner to the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship automatically, which will put them in contention to take the continent's berth in the Olympics. Full details do not seem to be available, but here were the final standings:

I have so many threads going these day that I forget to post in some of them.

Today, the South East Asia Basketball Association championships wrapped up. With the regional power of the Philippines out of the tournament, the other three teams were all in a position to compete for the title. Singapore took care of business early by winning the first two games, leaving Indonesia to beat Malaysia for second place in the final game. Again, this is one early part of the qualification process for the next Olympics.

This week, the West Asia Basketball Association had their championships. Lebanon had been trying to get a team together in time after their suspension was over (if you think the NBA has issues with refs and owners, they are no where near as bad as Lebanon's were last year) but did manage to do so, leaving the field at six teams. Iran, which did not need to qualify for the FIBA Asia Cup in July, sent their U18 team instead of the senior national team, but still managed to be in contention by finishing second. That left, Jordan, which had enough of their star players even missing a few, as the best team left, allowing them to win and grab the qualification spot for the next tournament. Two are their stars are former DII stars, Sam Daghles and their naturalized player Rasheim Wright. Syria finished third even without their star player while Palestine, led by emerging Asian star Sani Sakakini looked to establish itself, finishing fifth between Iraq and Yemen.

Here are the final standings:
Jordan 5-0
Iran 4-1
Syria 3-2
Iraq 2-3
Palestine 1-4
Yemen 0-5

In most countries, the international teams compete in something every single summer. The Women's National Teams in Europe that did not qualify for the World Championship are now playing for qualification to the next European Championship. Most of this set of games are tomorrow, but two teams who expect to qualify opened things up today as Russia defeated Sweden 65-51. Russia is some way short of full strength right now, and are not planning on using a naturalized player. Sweden's naturalized player, ex-North Carolina State player Ashley Key, had 12 points in the loss.

Teams in the Americas that are not the United States and Canada often have long paths to qualification for continent-wide and then worldwide events. Back in March, U15 teams from Central America participated in the COCABA tournaments. On the Boys' side, Panama, Costa Rica, and Guatemala took the top three spots. On the Girls' side, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador finished atop the standings. That qualified them for another tournament, this week's U15 Centrobasket. Teams passing this stage move on to the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 tournaments. Finally, teams from there move on to the 2016 U17 World Championships.
Here are details of these tournaments:

Luol Deng and Eric Boateng are among the players listed for Great Britain's summer plans as they try to qualify for the 2015 Eurobasket. Luol may not be involved due to his free agency situation, which makes it a little sillier that he opted to take last summer off instead of preplanning this absence.

The FIBA Asia Cup started on Friday in Wuhan, China. This is not the full continental championship, but the winner will automatically qualify to the one next summer which will determine Olympic berths. The format is already a little odd with 10 teams normally, but Uzbekistan dropped out too late to find a replacement, so they had to start with 9 teams in 2 groups with 8 teams advancing to the quarterfinals. Different teams have different goals for the tournament with most not having their strongest teams available. Iran and the Philippines are both in the midst of preparing for the bigger tournament of the summer in Spain.
The tournament started with the one game in Group B for the day as Taiwan beat Jordan 85-63. The battle of naturalized players was won by ex-Tulane player Quincy Davis, who had 21 points and 17 rebounds as he was helped by 10 points from DII player Kevin Hu. On the other side, ex-DII player Rasheim Wright contributed 21 points from the naturalized player position.

Today marked the conclusion of the two European U20 Women's Championships. While this is not a youth category at the global level, it is the premier one at the European level with the Men's competitions also underway.

The top 16 teams were in the A division tournament in Italy. The teams were divided into 4 groups with the top 3 teams in group A and B advancing to Group E and the top 3 teams in group C and D forming Group F. Those teams played the 3 groupmates that they did not play in the first round to complete a round robin as results from the first stage carried forward. The top 4 teams in Group E and F moved on to the knockout stages starting with a quarterfinal round. Meanwhile, the original last place teams played one another in Group G. Those games ranked teams for the knockout round of bottom half of teams. The teams that finished 14th, 15th, and 16th are going to play in the B division next season instead of being able to play in the A division.

The final game of the tournament did not end up being a great one as two teams originally in Group B, France and Spain, squared off with France getting the revenge from the first game by holding off Spain 47-42 in overtime. On the other end of the tournament, Sweden and Greece were bound for the B division after Saturday's games and were joined by Belarus after the final set of games as Belgium just survived.

I know that many people are keeping an eye on the future of basketball in Canada. The fact is, while there is a ton of talent coming through, the steps that are going to need to be taken to develop the program will involve a few obstacles. Canada has the fortune of qualifying directly for the Americas-wide tournaments. On the flip side, that means that they have fewer competitive basketball games than their competitors in the region. They are trying to address that this summer. They have no competitive games to play, but they still opted to put together a team and are set to tour Europe and face a variety of national teams. This plan also reveals the other issue as developing young NBA players is great, but relying on them to show up for the team every summer is difficult (except for Joel Anthony, who wanted to show up but was told not to come). While it seems only a matter of time before Canada at least puts together a competitive international team, there is still a lot of work to be done.

Here is their roster for the upcoming tour:

The latest tournament to start in the Americas is the Centrobasket for Women in Monterrey, Mexico. 8 teams from the Caribbean and Central Americas are competing for 4 spots in next summer's hemisphere-wide tournament as teams also face the prospect of their elimination from Olympic contention. Cuba is also in position to use this tournament to prepare for the World Championships that are two months away. The 3 Caribbean qualifiers who had to play in the tournament earlier in the month made a few roster changes to bolster their squad for this more competitive tournament.

The day started in Group B, where the US Virgin Islands beat Jamaica 56-46. In the win, ex-Portland player Natalie Day had 24 points and 18 rebounds and ex-Southern Miss player Tanecka Carey had 10 points. In the loss, Shereesha Richards of Albany had 15 points and ex-St. John's player Shenneika Smith had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Cuba smashed El Salvador 78-31 in the other game.

After watching them offer up the only real competition our U18 team faced at the World Championships a few weeks back, and considering that they have 13 mostly young players in the NBA, Canada feels like a real sleeping FIBA giant. It looks like they are trying to establish the same kind of "program" that the US has established - making sure they get together every summer, keeping some coaching consistency, etc. It looks like Nash is currently serving as the GM of the operation, kind of the Colangelo role. It will be interesting to see if they can get it together. Here are the canucks currently in the NBA:

Joel Anthony: 2007–2014 Miami Heat, 2014–present Boston Celtics
Anthony Bennett: 2013–present Cleveland Cavaliers
Samuel Dalembert: 2001–2010 Philadelphia 76ers, 2010–2011 Sacramento Kings, 2011–2012 Houston Rockets, 2012–2013 Milwaukee Bucks, 2013–2014 Dallas Mavericks, 2014-present New York Knicks
Tyler Ennis: 2014–present Phoenix Suns
Cory Joseph: 2011–present San Antonio Spurs
Steve Nash: 1996–1998 Phoenix Suns, 1998–2004 Dallas Mavericks, 2004–2012 Phoenix Suns, 2012–present Los Angeles Lakers
Andrew Nicholson: 2012–present Orlando Magic
Kelly Olynyk: 2013–present Boston Celtics
Dwight Powell: 2014–present Cleveland Cavaliers
Robert Sacre: 2012–present Los Angeles Lakers
Nik Stauskas: 2014–present Sacramento Kings
Tristan Thompson: 2011–present Cleveland Cavaliers
Andrew Wiggins: 2014–present Cleveland Cavaliers

Canada is definitely trying to establish the same sort of program as USA Basketball given similar obstacles in getting the best players to commit to level of training that other national teams do. Getting all of the young NBA talent on the court at the same time is going to be an obstacle, but having a Steve Nash involved has to be a big help. They had their first exhibition today, which will be in the other thread since it was against a team competing in Spain this summer.

If anyone is interested, the South American Championships are being shown on FIBA's YouTube Channel. Argentina and Brazil do not have the teams that they will use in Spain, but there are several interesting names who are trying to play their way onto the full national team later. Of course a recap and the rosters will be here later tonight.

Great Britain lost 79-64 to Belgium. It is not clear what role Eric Boateng had as full statistics are not available.

Group A opened Friday in the South American Championship as Brazil again started slow, but eventually eased past Ecuador, 106-54. In the win, Raul Neto, who was selected in the 2013 draft, had 11 points while ex-NAIA player Raul Cardenas had 10 points in the loss. Argentina was not particularly convincing, but they beat Paraguay 75-65 to clinch spots in the next round for both powerhouses and ensure that they have tournaments to play in next summer.

Ex-Texas A&M-Corpus Christi player Michael Hicks had 10 points in the win while ex-High Point player Akeem Scott had 14 points and 8 rebounds, and ex-Providence player Weyinmi Rose had 11 points. The other game in the group was between the two teams advancing to the semifinals and the Dominican Republic came back to beat Cuba 76-72 to take the top spot in the standings. The third place game at Centrobasket opened the night and the Dominican Republic beat Cuba 75-66. In the win, ex-UNC Greensboro player James Maye had 12 points and ex-Kentucky player Eloy Vargas and Ronald Roberts of St. Joseph's had 10 points each. Cuba clinches a spot in next summer's FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico. The Dominican Republic still has the big tournament to focus on this summer and some of the players in this tournament may have made enough of an impression to play a role going forward.

The final was a rematch of last year's FIBA Americas Championship Final and Mexico used their home court advantage in the second half to win again 74-60. Gustavo Ayon looks to be in shape for Spain as he had 16 points and 16 rebounds, ex-Wyoming player Francisco Cruz had 16 points, ex-New Mexico player Roman Martinez had 14 points and 7 rebounds, Jorge Gutierrez had 12 points, and ex-Fresno State player Hector Hernandez had 10 points. In the loss, ex-Florida player Mike Rosario had 14 points, ex-Wichita State player Ramon Clemente had 13 points, and ex-Siena player Alex Franklin had 10 points. Mexico basically has their full strength team, but they are already going to move on to the next stage of preparations. Puerto Rico will be reinforced by its more experienced players as they will hopefully beat up on Kentucky in the Bahamas.
