View Full Version : 2014 USA Teams Not Coached by a Duke Coach Thread

I figured I would just do a catch-all thread for the various USA youth teams.

Tyus and Justise as well as Luke Kennard are among the 21 players who will be in training camp in mid-June to fight for spots on the U18 team which will then compete in the U18 FIBA Americas Championship (all taking place in Colorado Springs).

You would have to figure that there is at least one future Duke Women's Basketball player somewhere in this list of 162 players trying out for the U17 Girl's team:

Thanks for the links and the thread.

Billy Donovan has certainly built up equity in the USA Program. Because of the duration of the NBA season, it makes sense that a college guy is a good fit for the top job. I'd have to think that if the USA Basketball honchos, Colangelo specifically is he keeps the Chairman job, decide to stick with a college coach, then Donovan would be the natural choice based on his vast experience.

Reading the article, I had no idea that the younger age groups hold developmental camps in the summers when there are no tournaments. They have really redesigned the whole program in a very smart way. They are consistently attracting the best players AND the best coaches. Sean Miller is one of Donovan's assistants.

I'm still hoping Popovich gets a shot.

Pops will be 71 by the time the 2020 Olympics roll around. My guess is that they hire someone with an eye towards at least two cycles. There is still plenty of time for the younger candidates to prove themselves.

Talk is talk, but here's what's working against Pop.

-Pop says he's going to retire when Duncan retires
-I think Colangelo and K have both said that the Team USA Coach needs to be an active coach
-Pop and Colangelo have a pretty spotty track record with each other

All that being said, I think Pop would be a fantastic candidate, probably the best candidate. I, too, would like to see him do it. If he is retired, it eliminates the NBA schedule conflicts.

awhom111 makes a great point about his age. The one additional thing in his favor is the respect he would command from the players. I would expect that only he, K, Phil Jackson would universally be able to command that level of respect from the players, though at that level and the way coach K and Colangelo have built up the program, I would expect the players to be quite coachable.

To bring back the conversation to this summer, here is all of the information on the Women's U18 team trials:

Unlike on the Men's side, these players will have the tryouts first and then re-convene for the tournament much later. This will help our 3 incoming players solidify their summer schedules soon. Also of note, U17 tryout players may be asked to be a part of this team as well. Of the 28 players listed, 27 of them are only available for the U18 team while 1 player is young enough to be on the U17 team, but is only listed on this tryout list and not the one for the younger team.

Although it seems like Billy Donovan has been coaching the junior teams for a while now, so maybe the players that will be on the 2020 and 2024 Olympic squads are already familiar with him?

Probably true. I am picturing guys like LeBron, Durant, Carmelo having more respect for Popovich, but they may not be the main guys in 2020.

The Coach of Team USA depends, I suppose, on what Colangelo and Krzyzewski think is needed. After the debacle of the Larry-Brown-coached 2004 team, the powers-that-be, including Colangelo, decided they needed a coach who could build a program for the National Team as well as coach it. As many others remember, Dean Smith was the guy that said that K was the only college coach who could do that. And he did: he visited every one of the eligible NBA stars and got their commitment to Team USA; he developed the concept of a 25-person national team, upon which the Olympic team and the FIBA team could draw and that would practice every year in some form. He, so far, has been hugely successful.

Will Team USA decide that it needs another program builder or can it primarily look for a coach? K is a unique case and individual, with his executive skills, and I don't necessarily think that a college coach would be a likely choice. K will have coached three Olympic and three FIBA teams. If that's a desirable pattern, then a younger coach would be an obvious choice. But there is no reason that the next coach has to be around for more than one cycle.

One interesting type of basketball that does not get much coverage is 3 on 3 (3x3 if you want to use the official parlance). The championships are taking place in Russia right now. USA Basketball was not about to use this as a diplomatic mission, so Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who was part of the team that won the qualifying tournament was replaced by a player who is not also an active Cabinet member. The men's team is 2-1 after one day. It would have been cool to see some more interesting names in the US championship to compete for this spot, but the timing was not really right for pro players and college guys did not seem interested. Some kind of Tyler Thornton, Josh Hairston, and some other guy team would have been fun to root for (Seth Curry? Todd Zafirovski? Nate James?). The US Women's team is undefeated after two games with four college players of varying levels of stardom make up the team.

I erred yesterday because Todd Zafirovski cannot play for a USA team and would only be allowed to represent Macedonia. Tyler, Josh, and Nate James it is.

Technically, this probably isn't the right thread for this information, since none of it pertains to basketball--but it does pertain to USA teams not coached by a Duke grad, and Duke participants on those teams. And I'm not sure it merits its own thread.

The US women's field hockey team, including former Duke star Stephanie Fee, won their pool and has reached the semifinals (http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=25939&SPID=2029&DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=209519454&DB_OEM_ID=4200) of the Women's World Cup, where they will face Australia tomorrow. It may be going too far to say this was an upset, but they did beat some teams with higher world rankings in their pool.

The US men's lacrosse team (http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=209520081&DB_OEM_ID=4200) that will play in this summer's world championship features two Duke grads, Ned Crotty and Dave Lawson. The team will face the Major League Lacrosse All-Stars on June 26 in Harvard Stadium; the All-Star team includes Duke grads Matt Danowski (also a Duke assistant coach), Mike Manley, and Justin Turri. There will be TV coverage on CBS Sports Network.

The US women's lacrosse team will be holding tryouts for the 2014-15 team (http://www.uslacrosse.org/multimedia-center/press-releases-news/postid/630/2014-15-us-womens-team-tryout-pool-announced.aspx) this weekend at Georgetown; among those selected for the tryout pool are Duke grads Sarah Bullard (2011) and Taylor Virden (2014) as well as undergrads Kerrin Maurer, Taylor Trimble, Gabrielle Moise, and Kelsey Duryea.

I actually considered doing a thread for the field hockey, which could have had an unprecedented finish. Losing to Australia in the penalty shootout prevents that now.

Back to basketball, Tyus and Justise, along with Luke survive the first set of cuts from 24 to 15. The last 3 cuts will be made later.

Games can be seen right on the FIBA Americas website at the time of the game:

Half time score--US 84, Uruguay 26. Only saw the last few minutes and I don't know the box score, but what I saw was pretty interesting. Clearly Uruguay is badly overrmatched. Even so, I'm pretty impressed with how well the US team is playing together and passing, etc., given they have only practiced together for a few days. Tyus threw an amazing behind-the-back no look pass to someone on the wing (can't say who, my live stream wasn't exactly high def), who quickly passed in to someone under the basket for an easy two.

The final was 156-58. Luke led not only the team but all players in the tournament in scoring on Day 1 with 30 points thanks to shooting 7 for 12 from behind the arc, adding 4 assists and 4 steals in 22 minutes. Tyus had 7 points, 6 assists and 4 steals in 14 minutes and Justise had 15 points in 13 minutes as the starters got plenty of rest. With 5 games in 5 days, that seems like a good idea.

I was impressed by all 3 of our guys. This was a huge mismatch, but we have a crazy number of long athletic players (USA cliche, I guess). Turner is a walking mismatch, Winslow and Johnson are trapping all over the place, Jones is tough, Kennard can really stroke it and looks completely confident in his shot. Everyone was good because the comp was so weak, but Alonzo Trier turned my head. That kid is tough.

awhom111, what do we think, the DR and Canada are the best remaining games to watch? None of these teams seem up to the task.

When I watched the YouTube feed the other night, it was in Spanish. I assume that's the only option? It's actually not so bad, I took some Spanish and am actually able to catch things here and there...like the players last names, and pelota!

For everyone else, the YouTube links that awhom11 have provided below let you check out the archive versions of the full games, and it's fun to see these kids put on a clinic for a quarter or two.

Group A is about to go 2-0 in the first set of crossover games, so it would seem that their two best teams should be a little better than the Group B teams we have faced so far. This tournament is not all that tough, but it is an important part of building some team chemistry this summer as the U19 Worlds are always extremely tough on the Americans as we saw with some real battles last summer.

Spanish is the only option although allegedly some English commentary will arrive at some point.

The games are getting a little more serious now with the United States beating the Dominican Republic 90-56 in the semifinals. Tyus got more playing time and had 14 points and 7 assists in 27 minutes. Justise struggled a bit and ended up playing 19 minutes. Luke had 11 points in 12 minutes. I could only catch the second half of the semi-final against DR, but I think I was looking at some pretty tired young men on both teams. Donovan has been doing a good job of spreading the minutes around, but he has them playing a lot of full-court press/trap on defense and running on offense. Plus, they're playing at 6000ft.

Tyus Jones had a couple of long passes toward the end of the 3rd quarter for scores. One was a long alley-oop to Winslow. The other was a long pass from across mid-court to Turner under the basket. He's going to punish college teams that don't get back on defense. Justise Winslow is going to be a really tough matchup for a lot of teams. Luke Kennard could be scary good by the time he suits up 16 months from now. I didn't see much of Jeter in the second half.

Canada: I don't know much about their team (or Canadian HS basketball), but looking at their roster I didn't recognize names. Team USA has between 6 and 10 guys who will almost certainly play in the NBA, some quite soon. Does Team Canada have any likely NBA players?

This Canada team is not quite as strong as the one from two years ago. A bunch of their players are at US prep schools with most bound for NCAA schools (at least one of them is already committed to play in Canada's college system).

Geno, obviously using this team as a self-serving way of promoting UConn with his featuring of one of his current players and 50 bajillion alums, had his first exhibition (in Connecticut no less) against Canada. The game was close for a half, but the team made a run to start the second half to roll to a 76-51. The players in the WNBA finals will join the team en route to Europe as a number of cuts still to be made.

These players do not make as much money as NBA players and they play all year around just to make the money they do make, but they still show up for this thing during literally their only break time in the entire year.

Geno finally had something approaching his full team available as they started a tournament in France. The first game was against Australia and the team had a tough first half before a big run to start the second half and then hanging on to a 72-66 win. Australia was hurt by the fact that Liz Cambage limped off due to an injury after contributing 9 points and 9 rebounds in only 9 minutes. With both teams experimenting with various rotations, no American players reached double figures, but a pair of ex-WNBA players did in the loss as Belinda Snell had 13 points and Laura Summerton had 10 points.

It was the last day of the tournament in France, and the United States faced the hosts. The lineup was switched up a bit to go smaller and the team jumped out to an early lead only to lose each of the last three quarters and fall 76-72. Tina Charles had 12 points and 7 rebounds, Maya Moore had 11 points, Angel McCoughtry had 10 points and 6 rebounds, and Diana Taurasi had 10 points. Sandrine Gruda could not be stopped, even by one of her teammates keeping her firmly planted on the bench with the Los Angeles Sparks, as she finished with 26 points and 15 rebounds. This game was certainly taken seriously, with nine players in the main rotation and only two other players seeing action. Now the team has to make decisions on cuts while also looking to win their last exhibition on the way to Turkey. I supposed we are due some angry yahoo articles on Geno or something.

The United States closed out its exhibition schedule by winning 76-41 at the Czech Republic. Tina Charles had 16 points and 7 rebounds and Nneka Ogwumike had 12 points and 10 rebounds. USA Golf needs Coach K to coach the next Ryder Cup if they ever have a chance to win again!

Seriously... :)

Although I'm sure there's a golf coach out there who would complain he's getting an advantage recruiting golfers to come to Duke.

But he'd have them stepping off the green to chip in from long range.
