I thought the "throw back" was referring to how the ACC is handling the tiny fish known as "the terps".

Good old normal looking uniforms with the actual team colors. What a novel idea.

I cannot wait to waste too much money on one of those at the Duke Store. So much better than the grays from two years ago

And why the throwback jerseys you ask?

"Nike will make them available for fans in March."

I do like the name of the line, though: "Hyper Elite Dominance Throwback Uniforms." Sounds like "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." I hope Nike will have lunch boxes and backpacks.

The Syracuse ones also look excellent. That would have been great to play this weekend in those uniforms.

Also, this is now three years in a row we've played Maryland with crazy Nike uniforms. Subtle, eh?

This is obviously going to come to an end after this season, but it's no accident that Nike whips out the one-off Duke unis for games against Maryland, Under Armour's flagship school. It'll probably be ND (which is switching from adidas to UA next year) going forward.

Ah, I hate it when Nike urinates on people and claims it's raining. The shirts are classic. However, if they wanted me to purchase Teenange Mutant Ninja unis, the shorts need to have the solid blue stripe, and the D with the basketball / hoop in the middle.

If they were really daring, they would feature short-shorts (or at least shorter-shorts). When I go back into the archive to replay classic games with Laettner and GHill, the young Turks get distracted by the shorts and the hairstyles. Usually you want kids to learn to watch the action that goes on away from the basketball, but in this case, I would settle if they could just follow the ball and shut up about the shorts.

Are these throwbacks based off of actual old uniform designs, or are they just sort of "throwback inspired"?

The Carolina ones look pretty authentic from the old days, but did Syracuse and Ohio State really have mismatched colors on their shorts and jerseys back in the day? I don't remember Kentucky having the horizontal grey stripes on their shorts.

The Oregon shorts are hideous.

I agree.

There was a bench player at Arizona the year we beat them in the National Championship game named Eugene Edgerson. He had a large afro, wristbands, elbow pads, the whole nine... claiming that he (I'm paraphrasing) "wanted to be as old school as possible". I always thought that if he were daring, as you say, and really wanted to fully embrace his old school aspirations, that he would get a play in a pair of shorter shorts.

I'm probably old enough to be considered an "upper crusty", and I I'd say all the shirts are spot-on with the old designs. The only whilff is the Mich State gold color - I don't think they ever wore gold; it was the home whites when Magic played.

Looks to me they completely made up the shorts (excuse me, "throwback inspired" - well said), although Carolina's are pretty close to the pre-plaid days. I have to wonder about the shorts that are different color than the shirts; no one ever did that. Except maybe high schools; some used to have just one color shorts and wear either light or dark shirts if home or away.

The fonts for the jerseys appear accurate for almost all (I have no idea about Oregon) -- MSU (Magic/'79 team, although those home unis were white & not gold), Syracuse (Rony Seikaly era), Carolina's Dean Smith-era unis (do they also get warm up shirts with the U, N and C on the front?) ...not sure what era the OSU & Kentucky jerseys represent but they seem accurate.

I recall Nike rolled out throwback unis for Duke in the 2005 season, the Duke BB centennial season - those unis were more vanilla than these.

I like our version of these throwbacks more than any of the rest. I don't remember us ever wearing Home shorts without the Prussian/Royal Blue side panel, though(I mean other than the pre-K-era).

I believe there was an article that came out about these throwbacks during the pre-season and they said they were going to be based off of the 91-92 team, if I remember correctly.

Personally, the '93-'94 Duke Home and Road uni's are my favorite, along with the '97-'98 Black "Alternate" Uni's for special occasions.

BTW, exactly how many "uniform" threads are there on DBR now? I think I've started at least 2 seperate threads myself on them? LOL.:p

If they were really daring, they would feature short shorts with a belt and Chuck Taylors (http://www.mainlineautographs.com/images/product_pics/PTDC0027_20120319288.gif) (now that Nike owns Converse).

Would bet that John Stockton still wears short shorts when he plays one-on-one with his son

Two quibbles with the "throwbacks" if based on 91-92
1. the font used to be arched not radial
2. side panels on the shorts used to be blue and didn't have the point at the bottom

When our uniforms seldom change, it's hard to do too much with the throwback concept

They are a huge improvement to all previous special Nike uniforms however

I believe that should be remarkable! Remarkable Spanarkable. (would have sporked you but need to spread the sporks around first.)

And if Nike really wanted to throwback to the '91-'92 season - forget the blue on the side of the shorts, they need to get rid of that annoying swoosh. :D

Can't be 91-92...that has a V-neck. The rounded neck looks more like maybe '78? See G-man and Tink (http://www.imageslides.com/Sports/gallery/1519-vs-Classic-Photos-of-the-ACC-%20Tournament#4). The '77 team (http://goduke.statsgeek.com/basketball-m/seasons/season-stats.php?season=1976-77) had radial lettering.

By the way, here (http://www.syracuse.com/orangebasketball/index.ssf/2014/01/jim_boeheims_history_with_duke.html) is a Duke opponent from 1966, sporting his short shorts.

P.S. He scored 15 against Duke in a losing effort in the East Regional finals that year, teaming with Dave Bing. Duke went on to lose to Kentucky in the Final Four, and that was the Kentucky team (with All-American Pat Riley) that lost to Texas Western (featuring an all black starting 5) in the finals.

Well, it wasn't exactly a spanking.

As throwbacks go, they were pretty painless, but I'll be glad to see our regular unis back for the rest of the season... unless of course we could permanently throwback to the 2001s.

I love the simplicity of the throwbacks and wish these were our full time uni's. From the strange blue color on our road jerseys, the black jerseys (which I've never liked), and the strange blue outline and faint silhouettes on the current home jerseys, I don't feel that there's much in the way of tradition.

Would love simple, timeless, clean unis. No flash.

They were only schedule to wear them for the Maryland game (like the gray unis from 2012 or last year's blue alternates). The fact that the team wore them for UNC likely means that the captains elected to wear them, so we may see them again this year if that's what the team wants (also doesn't hurt that we are 2-0 in them).

Verga's uniform made its appearance in the 1961-62 season. Heyman was often pictured in it. (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/36/Art_Heyman.jpg) The DUKE was a little blockier that than the previous one and seemed to be of more substantial material, but maybe that was just the cut.

If we really wanted throwbacks, we should go to the uni that the team wore when we went to out first NCAA tournament in the spring of 1960. (http://goduke.statsgeek.com/basketball-m/seasons/season-stats.php?season=1959-60)

Or the first uniform ever retired: Dick Groat (http://thumbs3.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mIpgwSOJIRiyrOcN6AUzSUg.jpg)

That first picture is actually the "new" 1962-63 uniform, which, when seen in color had slight red trim accents and was the first uniform to have names on the back. They were considered fancy and innovative at the time.

Yep. Sorry. It had the "Fergusos" error on the back (instead of Ferguson) and their appearance was delayed a game.
