Just came across this cool graphic (http://mode.github.io/blog/2014-01-16-football-hometowns/index.html#) showing the counties from whence D1 football players hail. It can filter by conference and school, and display by total count or local per capita.

Very neat, albeit with one large caveat: the data seem to be scraped from ESPN, so it might be less accurate than we might hope.

Still, a fun toy.

Much like Lenny Wirtz, this is an amazing tool.

Some observations:

1. UNC has zero recruits in California, and only three recruits in Texas (all in the DFW area). Surely more high schoolers from those 2 states would love to not get an education.
2. Neither the SEC nor ACC recruits in New Mexico. At all. Maybe Duke should go after that Roswell receiver with suction cups for hands and otherworldly footwork.
3. The hotbeds of Big Ten recruiting are in the Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis areas. Good luck with that, Maryland.
4. Speaking of Chicago, what's with all the kickers and punters? It's like they practice over Lake Michigan, hitting unsuspecting persons in the Lower Peninsula.
5. The Texas Longhorns, unsurprisingly, recruit mostly within their state. But Mack Brown didn't even try the state of North Carolina. It's like he knew something...

Anyone else live in a zero county?
