For a little more information from the link, redshirt freshman Katie Heckman won't play for Duke. She is accepting a medical hardship following a torn ACL and two knee surgeries. She will remain at Duke and get her degree.

Sorry to hear that Katie won't be able to play. Happy to hear she'll remain to get her degree.

Prayers for a full recovery, a great experience at Duke as a student, and a wonderful future!

Another sad ending to an athletic career. I am proud of Katie to continue at Duke to finish her degree. Best wishes to Katie in her full life.

So what does "medical hardship" mean--she can continue to receive a scholarship but it doesn't count against Duke's total? Or something else?
