Not really Duke related. But pretty funny.

Not really Duke related. But pretty funny.

A few things.

1) JR Smith is what makes the NBA entertaining and pitiful all at the same time. Volatility is often amusing to the casual fan and frustrating to the hardcore fan.

2) The shoelace stunt is a really good strategy as a one-off. Given, it's poor form, but I can see how you can gain a slight competitive advantage with it.

3) It's a shame Smith didn't go to UNC like he was supposed to. RoyWill caught a break with that decision.

4) Smith is now on the Knicks trading block: http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/10264339/new-york-knicks-explore-jr-smith-trade-scenarios

This appears to be a largely ceremonial gesture as the trade market for JR is not exactly HOT right now. Then again, the Knicks ownership is so dumb that a sharp front office might seize upon the opportunity to try and fleece them.

As a Knicks fan, JR is kind of like one of those embarrassing relatives...he drives you crazy but he is family. Unfortunately, the negatives are really starting to outweigh the positives, this past weekend in the waning moments against the Rockets was a recent low (http://nba.si.com/2014/01/04/j-r-smith-three-pointer-knicks-lose-rockets-andrea-bargnani/).

I think it is entertaining...if he's the only one doing it, let it go and have a sense of humor...good grief. Its not like there is a rash of Smith copy cats out there. As far as I know if hasn't impacted any games.

Once, maybe--but twice might be over the top. Reminds me a bit of the playground in second grade. And it's actually possible, if unlikely, someone could get hurt tripping over an untied lace.

Agreed. And what if he starts tying someone's shoes together? He's dumb enough to try it.

I too wish he'd gone to care-bore-lina.

Shane said he would retire if J.R. Smith tried to untie his shoes

"My reaction would be, 'You know what? It's time for me to retire from the NBA.' It's about time for me to step away from the league. I'm close to that point, but if that happens. I'll know it's time for me to go," he said, while adding he hasn't noticed Smith trying to undo his laces in the past.

OTOH, Chris Bosh said he would just re-tie his shoes if Smith tried to untied them.

Some wisdom definitely buried in that observation.....

Here are some teases from the article:

Within days of J.R. Smith arriving armed with a historic $3 million contract, Zhejiang of the Chinese Basketball League had come to regret signing the clown prince of basketball. From unreasonable demands on the kind of car needed to curry him around the city, ... Smith's bad act had never been worse.

Perhaps his greatest excess of idiocy had been a weekend of running a room service bill into the proximity of $3,000, ... – "just to see if they would keep bringing it to the room...."

Wait - you're never done that before? Everything I travel on my company's dime, I order 3 dozen NY strips cooked well done. They provide an extra layer of heating for 1,000-thread sheeted bed I sleep on.

JR Smith - the classy players that UNC recruits.
