Carolina allowed 53 points in the first half to... Texas... In the Dean Dome... Coached by Rick Barnes... With one junior and no seniors.... With no players that will make all conference in a weak Big 12...

That all being said, this is the epitome of '90s Rick Barnes team. No stars, tough defense, occasional offensive impotence. They actually may save his job.

On the lob where Brice Johnson caught it, came down, then went back up and dunked it, how many saw the illegal blatant push in the back (he pushed him two steps from the backside) on the back pick, and who was the guilty heel?

I don't think it's Barnes. They do that every game. Doesn't help that the players throw their hands up, jump up and down, and do their best Rasheed Wallace impression every single time a call goes for the opponent. I guess in their eyes it is not fair to make any call in favor of the opponent no matter what.

I think that Barnes may have outgrown his anti-Carolina post game rants, but he deserves to throw one tonight. Texas is driving to the hole nearly every time down the court and they are getting hacked nearly every time. These are fouls any year, not just this year with the rules emphasis. Texas is getting totally jobbed right now.

I thought that Texas would collapse when UNC tied it up, but they hung tough. I'm not quite sure how Texas allowed Carolina an open three at the end that would have tied the game, but fortunately they missed.

How? Two words: Rick Barnes.

So how did unc blow that free throw shooter block out with 7 seconds? He was wide open with a clear lane!

That was a classic blunder, right up there with a land war in Asia.

Rick certainly didn't win this one. unc choked it away on that (lack of) play.

This. Game result directly influenced by the wheels falling off the ref mobile at the end. Just mind blowingly bad calls and no calls in the last 5 minutes.

And yes, we should have won on our FTs too.

This is a good one, too. At least we know Rick Barnes matters:

Losing to Rick Barnes is a slap in the face to Dean Smith. There was no excuse for losing this game, none at all. Barnes and Rat, it really ****** me off to lose to either one. Well, next week the Heels will be out of the top 25 or darn close to it.

And this old guy hates Roy:

The most fundamentally unsound team I have ever seen in my 53 years of being a Carolina fan. I would rather be beaten by 30 points to a better opponent. Anyone wanting to argue how good of a coach Roy Williams is can kiss my arse. Coach Smith would never had allowed any of his teams to miss this many freethrows and offensive rebounds. Just a total disgrace! TOTAL DISGRACE REGARDLESS OF ANY OTHER VICTORY THIS YEAR!

YES!

UNC got what they deserved.

I can't decide what result I like more, though...

- Game winner at the buzzer to beat UNC
- Heartbreaking barely missed 3 at the buzzer for UNC to lose
- Blowout defeat of UNC

I prefer the UNC is up 10+ and then have the other team and beat UNC by 10+ like Georgetown did in the tourney in 2007. Its great to see Roy clam up like that. He had 0 idea what to do. It was like watching the USSR coach in the Miracle on Ice game.

The reason foul shots are bad is that they devalue post presence. That dang line is like fifteen feet away.

Typical game against a Rick Barnes coached team. He likes a deep bench and aggressive players willing to use all five fouls. His teams always play tough.

Haven't seen the stats, but it sure seemed they shot it well from 3 for a team where that was supposed to be a weakness. It was a good effort by their guards.

Texas played tougher. They went hard at the ball or the basket every play. I thought that was the difference in a nutshell.

Not that UNC didn't play hard, I was encouraged by how they were still in it late after another horrid game from the line. But the 50-50 balls and plays just didn't go UNC's way tonight, and with a strong effort from Texas on the boards along with the terrible UNC foul shooting(again)...it was too much to overcome.

I was really sorry to see James go down with that injury. He seems to be a really fun loving kid and he's worked so hard to get into shape. His size would have helped tonight, but regardless, I know it took me out of the game emotionally for the first part of the first half after he went down, so it had to be hard on his teammates.

This was not a "bad" loss. Texas is a good team and imposed their will on the game. It's still in the learning curve phase, and the young UNC players saw another level of determination they better learn to match.

Sophomore and leading returning scorer. He's a homeless man's Khalid El Amin which isn't necessarily a bad thing now that he is backing up Taylor and not being counted on as the main PG.

Texas is an interesting team. There were no expectations this year (in fact, most thought it would be worse than last year). Carolina is the first good team they've played and they've struggled with several sub -mid majors. But it's kind of a typical Barnes team from his Clemson years and pre TJ Ford Texas years. It may get him back on the right track here.

Something needs to be done about the refs. I am as happy as anyone that UNC lost, but this game was horrific to watch... I am not sure what the heck the NCAA is trying to do anymore... but I can tell you, NO ONE watches MBB to see 80 FT/game. Throw in the monitor reviews and the refs are getting more air time than the players. UGH!

My wife was complaining about how bad the refs were, mostly on some "touch" fouls they did call on UNC, which for the most part I agreed with her that they were NOT fouls, but I had to point out to her that UNC did get over 45 attempts at the line as well. She is pretty rational and agreed that the refs were awful for both teams. They were.

This game could have been very entertaining if they had let the kids play. Both UNC and Texas wanted to push the tempo and for the first 5 mins did just that. It had promise at that point, then the refs decided to insert themselves and the rest of the game had NO rhythm or continuity.

BTW, I hate "anticipatory" whistles... The foul at the end when the UNC player was trying to get to and foul the Texas player, was actually NOT a foul on UNC and was a foul on Texas, except that the ref blew the whistle before the play happened.... as a fan of basketball, this is hard to watch....

p.s. As far as Roy's comment about not rebounding and playing soccer... the UNC kids have the "fainting" goat act down pretty good and would make that part of the transition to soccer seamlessly.

That and they play terrible perimeter defense. Good 3 point shooting teams will just have to attempt a drive into the lane and kick the ball out for a wide open 3. This is not a new, UNC has had this tendency for years, but with Britt and Paige they "seem" more at risk this year than I remember them being recently.

Btw... The Big12 deserves some love. OSU, ISU, Baylor, Texas, and Oklahoma are 57-4. (My Hawks are bringing up the rear of the good teams at 7-3). Baylor did almost lose to a bad team in overtime last night, and OU's schedule is pretty weak, but nobody anywhere expected anything like that from those 5 teams.

Back on Texas, they lost their top 4 scorers from last year (Kabongo, Papetrou, McClellan, Lewis). Felix is the top scoring returning player, and he only averaged 6 ppg last year. It's a long season, so I'm not about to claim they are a Top 10 team, Rick Barnes IS still heavily involved, but 10-1 is downright shocking.

Agreed on all points. Tejas is not a bad or weak team, and they are doing well in spite of their Clemson reject coach.

If Tejas decided to put money into a basketball coach, like they are willing to do for football, they could be world beaters. Barnes gets a lot of talent in the program, not sure how much over the last few years is local/regional and how much is drawn in. Give me the five best kids in Texas, though, and I've got a damn good team without much coaching involved.

Two of UNC's losses (this and Belmont) are directly attributable to horrid free throw shooting. Maybe the third one too, don't recall. UNC is playing well and its players are pretty cohesive right now. Not a lot of margin for error if someone gets hurt though.

Yeah, with two institutions like UNC and the NCAA we never know for sure, but I'd say big plus for the Heels on court if P.J. does return. They gain a really good shooter, and have fewer minutes for some of their lousy shooters.

Team chemistry unknown in that case, but I think there would be strong motivation from all concerned to make it work.

In the last 7 years, Barnes has signed only ONE of the top 10 players from Texas in that particular year. Which is beyond crazy. Gee, I wonder how UT would look if they got HALF of a group that included Julius Randle, the Harrison Bros, Keith Frazier, Matt Jones, Isaiah Austin, Rasheed Sulaimon, and Marcus Smart.

He's in on Myles Turner, and varying reports say he has a chance, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Apparently, that is the rule in Chapel Hill ... at least these two guys weren't escorted out at the direction of Roy Williams.

The irony there Oly, is that Monday Night at the Gardner-Webb game, 3 college age UNC fans (sitting 2 rows directly behind me) came into Cameron wearing UNC T-Shirts, holding signs that read "Free PJ", stood and yelled during free throws and other quiet times, did the "Tar" "Heels" chant, and their signs and standing were blocking the view of the Duke fans behind them. So they got tossed from the building right? No. A few Duke fans took pics of them, a few heckled them (I did not hear a single curse word from any Duke fan nor the UNC kids), one Duke fan jerked a sign away from one of them and threw it to another guy who tore it up, and finally, security came and took the other signs, and politely asked them to sit down.
That's it. No ruckus, no removing them from the building, and no threatening to remove them from the building. 95% of the folks, myself included, simply laughed it off, and I fully agreed with the actions taken by security. While I thought their actions were rude and stupid, they did not use foul language, did not taunt, mock or yell ugly names at our players, or our fans, or anything remotely close to that.
These were fans of our hated rival, wearing our rivals gear, at a game where we are not playing our rival, yet they were not tossed for their actions. The Gardner-Webb fans, like every other fanbase I have seen in my many years of attending games at Cameron, were cheering loudly for their team and against Duke. I have never once seen an opposing fan tossed there for simply cheering for their team or against Duke.

The policies at the Dean Dome are apparently much different.

"UNC forward Joel James left the game in the first half with right knee injury and did not return. After examination, the team believes it is an injury to his MCL but not his ACL. The next step will be an MRI, and James is scheduled to be re-evaluated today."

Sorry to hear that, I hope he has a full recovery and that it is not a bad injury.

Kenpom, RPI, and BPI all have Duke outside the top 20. They also all have Texas outside the top 25. It's early in the year but still...

Ken Pom has Duke at 21 (it was 20 yesterday). He has Texas at 55 (they were 63 yesterday before beating UNC). Saying that two teams are both outside the top 20 is true, but there is a large difference between 21 and 55

Not the way they "do" math at unc ...

If I, as a ticket holder, am ever forcibly removed from the Dean Dome, they'll have to change the name to the John Dome as part of the settlement.

I wasn't comparing Duke and Texas. I was comparing where they are ranked or where people think they should be ranked to actual statistical analysis of what the teams have accomplished this year.

Pretty hilarious commentary of the Dean Dome and UNC fans from an outsider's perspective. Includes discussion of the Texas fans who were removed from the stadium for cheering during UNC free throws...

Like we often say around here near Christmas time: "Ol Roy, the gift that keeps on giving"

I have been trying to find the link to the presser video but no luck yet. His presser's after losses are especially entertaining...

Amazing. Had I been playing the Roy Williams press conference drinking game, I'd be in the hospital.

Classic.

This has got to make the Ole Roy Greatest Hits collection, though I guess we're well past Volume 1 of such a collection.

Order now and you get the bonus CD, a compilation of the screams of players being run over by the roy driven bus (many of whom now play soccer).

Thanks Duvall. Classic indeed. And who is Barry?? He references a Barry "showing his tail" that flew right over my head. Maybe I set the bar too high, but I always find myself asking, "How would K respond to that question" or "What would K's demeanor be like after a loss to a good Texas team at home" and I am thinking it would be nothing like Roy and his answers. I have seen K angry in a presser for sure, but he still is very calculating with word choice, tone, etc. I have also noticed that Roy often looks to the SID to validate his answer even on benign questions. Odd.

So we can add "i am not in the friggin Christmas spirit guys" to the every growing list that includes BB guns. momma, getting drunk, a train, oh wait sorry, mixed Roy's quotes in with the greatest Country and Western song ever, my bad...

Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson, Roy's colleague in bus-throwing.

This is one of the main reasons I pull for UNC to lose. Roy is better than the "jelly of the month" club.

Lack of effort is the hardest thing to watch. I understand Roy being hacked because it just looked like Texas wanted the game more... they did destroy UNC on the boards.

The thing about opposing fans being tossed from the DD is not surprising when you think about their mindset. The average UNC fan views all other fans as being inferior and the only reason anyone is NOT a UNC fan is because the "couldn't get into UNC"....

I don't know why anyone would want to go to a game in the DD, the place is awful! The color is like Pepto Bismol blue, except pepto relieves nausea, and UNC blue causes nausea.

The people are rude and arrogant, there is no parking, and the atmosphere is legendary for being... well boring. The most exciting the place usually gets is during the pre-game "how stupid can I look" dancing exhibit! And that is faux excitement, generated with loud music and lights. I have heard that on occasion the place can be loud, but it usually only happens a couple of games a year.

Save the cash and watch the games on TV, you really will not be missing ANYTHING.

My explanation is simple: Roy Williams' press conferences, especially after losses, are like psychotherapy sessions. Therefore, we all get to be shrinks.

It sorta works for Roy, but is exasperating to many UNC fans.

In the case of a loss like last night, Coach K would spend a lot of time talking about how well Texas played. Then he'd say our [whatever] needed a lot of work. He might single out a player or two for having a poor game, as well as one who had a good game. All business, all professional. It may not work with a hyper-emotional fan base like UNC's. But then K has chops that even HOFer Williams doesn't have (long-term president of coaches association, most wins, two Olympic golds, seven (or so) AP number 1 teams, and 33 years in one place).

Steve Spurrier OTOH would handle it differently from either Roy or K, and would take his country-boy act in a different direction: "We got our butts kicked. It was a team loss. I didn't prepare the team properly, especially on free throws, but sometimes, as I tell our guys, 'Ya' just have to make shots and grab rebounds.' Texas wanted these more than we did. I'll think of some things to make us better, and we'll see if it gets through."

The dadgum Christmas spirit line is a great one. However, I think the following quote from his speech is better:

"You gotta be tough enough to step up and make the dadgum free throw, or else go play soccer or something"

That sounds at least as much like us as it does like them.

As for Roy's presser, this is up there with Jim Mora Sr's "Diddly-poo" and "Playoffs," Winston Churchill's "We shall fight," and maybe the big Agincourt speech in Henry V. This is a masterpiece of oratory.

I love how he realizes he's taken a dump on soccer and then half-apologizes to Anson Dorrance.

I'd actually wear a Carolina blue t-shirt if the text read "I am not in the dadgum Christmas spirit." I'd like one right now before I embark on the Christmas trip.

I can fully understand why you view it that way, as we have "those fans" in our fanbase, but, having lived here in the Triangle for all of my 47 years, I promise you we (the Duke fanbase) don't even approach the level of arrogance their fanbase has in droves. It really is very different. I see it every single day. I hope you read my account of the 3 UNC fans visiting Cameron during the Gardner-Webb game, and for comparison, read the article linked earlier in this thread about the Texas fans experience last night. It may explain what I mean far better than I could ever put in words.

True story here. A good friend of mine who is a huge life long Duke fan, (but actually went to school at UNC), has a son who is also a huge Duke fan. A few years ago his son was about 20 yrs old and dating this lovely coed from UNC. Her family had season tickets for basketball, and she invites him to a big game one night, with her and her parents. I believe it was against Kentucky but either way it was a big game. The kid shows up at her house wearing nice jeans and a nice Duke T-Shirt. Her father comes in the room, and says "Oh no son, you absolutely cannot go with us wearing that shirt. Let me go grab a nice button down shirt from my closet and you can wear that over your Duke shirt but you have to promise not to reveal the Duke shirt at any time during the game. We could lose our seats if we bring a Duke fan in our seats wearing Duke gear"

The kid did as he was asked, but were it me, no way. I would have said, "no problem sir, I will just stay here and catch the game on the tube, or go back home if your daughter really wants to go to the game, but if I go to the game, I am wearing what I have on".

I could go on and on and on, and again not sure how to describe it, but their arrogance is topped by nobody. Which has been revealed in a large way during this 3 years and counting scandal. Yes we have some bad apples, but their entire tree is rotten.

Les Robinson's son-in-law.

(Actually, one of the refs asked for security to remove him. The Duke staff next to him behind the scorer's table said he said nothing out of line other than criticizing a call with acceptable language.)

I just drove from StL to Cincinnati. 300 of the 360 miles were in a Mississippi-esque monsoon. I think we nearly died in Indianapolis.

My take on this was "I am not in the dadgum Christmas spirit!" I think RoyRoy has given a jewel for the ages.
