Watch these ACC players try...funny...I think Wojo's name is tougher. Once you nail the ZYZ, K's name is pretty basic, as he points out at the end.

~20 years ago, my then young teenaged daughter could spell Krzyzewski, Wojciechowski AND Domzalski in about 4 seconds total, and you could hear each letter succinctly. It was amazing. I had her do it for Julio at halftime of a game one time. He was impressed, as we all were!

Have your daughter contact me for support group info if she's interested.

Back when I did my Navy ROTC plebe week at Duke (my father, who was a USNA graduate and who had Alan Shepherd as his personal plebe summer demon-tormentor, still scoffs at even calling that week anything other than summer camp, but I digress) one of the things that we could be commanded to do at any moment by a bristling Gunnery Sergeant was "SPELL KRZYZEWSKI"

"Sir, K R Z Y..."

"SIR?! DO I LOOK LIKE AN OFFICER TO YOU?! I WORK FOR A LIVING!"

"Gunnery Sergeant, no, Gunnery Sergreant!"

"NO? I DON'T LOOK LIKE I WORK FOR A LIVING?"

"Gunnery Sergeant, yes, I mean no, I mean..."

"DEAR GOD DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH?!"

"Gunnery Sergeant..."

"SPELL KRZYZEWSKI!!!!!"

Good times!

"Our students can't spell Krzyzewski... theirs can't spell Smith"

A classic from Francis Redding, circa 1995

I remember when Craig Kilborn had his late night show he had Coach K on there and during his nightly feature of "5 Questions" one of them was to spell his name. There was a nice rhythm to it - K, R.....Z, Y, Z....E, W....S, K, I.

I'd have to sift through a lot of old 35mm prints, but I think I have a picture of that on the old scoreboard.

I think that Dawkins should start over Thornton in the next spelling bee; he would have brought it home with a W.

Nick Faust: "Kreyschewizzle." By far the best one.

My parlor trick was spelling it backwards, fast!

Wasn't that a McDonald's commercial? ;)

I have been using that trick, like forever, it seems. It's so easy that way.

I'm reminded of this delightful old chestnut:

Wow! That had WAY less production value than I remember it having, though. But still a great riff on the original commercial! Thanks for the memories.
