"Duke redshirt freshman safety DeVon Edwards was named FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week alongside Stanford linebacker Shayne Skov, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced Tuesday.

The award is the second national player of the week citation for Edwards, who scored three non-offensive touchdowns in Duke’s 38-20 win over N.C. State Saturday. Two of his touchdowns came on back-to-back fourth-quarter interception returns of 25 and 45 yards, while his other came on a 100-yard kickoff return. Edwards also logged 10 tackles and a pass breakup in his second career start.

Edwards’ first interception return for a touchdown came with Duke holding on to a 20-17 lead with less than four minutes in the fourth quarter, while his second came 16 seconds later to push the final margin of victory to 38-20. The win improved Duke to 7-2 on the season and 3-2 in ACC play while extending the Blue Devils’ winning streak to five games.

Edwards was also named Walter Camp Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week and ACC Rookie of the Week for his performance, which marked the first time in the past 10 seasons that a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player scored three non-offensive touchdowns in a game.

In being named Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, Edwards will be added to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list, joining Duke redshirt senior cornerback Ross Cockrell on the list. The Nagurski Trophy will be trimmed to five finalists Nov. 21, and the winner will be announced Dec. 9."
