This is a very interesting read (http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9795591/kirk-goldsberry-introduces-new-way-understand-nba-best-scorers)from Grantland's Kirk Goldsberry.

It is based on an anlaysis of every shot taken in the NBA and the expected points per shot from each spot on the floor. Then it calculates each player's performance against that average and determines who are the best shooters and scorers in the NBA. It's kind of like calculating adjusted ERA+ in the MLB. I really enjoyed reading this.

Is this the same system that Duke will be using for basketball (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304520704579127281774259324.html) this year? It was a DBR front page story (http://www.dukebasketballreport.com/articles/?p=48509) yesterday. I would like to know more about it, but SportVU for Dummies has not been published yet, as far as I can tell.

Here's a possible "SportVu for Dummies" piece from Goldsberry. Teams license the cameras and can do what they want with the data, and Toronto trying to mathematically determine the best place for defenders to be on a given sequence.

Goldsberry's shot analysis uses much simpler data points: who took the shot, where did they take it, and did it go in. His breakthroughs are 1) a very cool "heat map" shot chart, and 2) aggregating the league average and then comparing a specific player against the average. I really liked the Grantland piece too.

P.S. DOH!! There's a separate SportVu thread, and an even better link - I missed the article where the NBA bought it and installed it in all the arenas.

I guess the moderators have not notice the two threads.

That's great stuff. I can't wait to see what they do with the SportVU data regarding how each shot was defended.
