View Full Version : This kind of thing could almost get me to root for Carolina

Almost

Despite losing five players off last season's NIT team, ... Returning forward Alex Poythress isn't running from the [preseason #1] hype:

“If we put our mind to it, once everybody gels, I say we can do anything. The sky is the limit for this team, so why not aim at 40-0? We might as well try to do it, right?

“Why not? What's stopping us? The only thing stopping us is us this year, so we might as well try to do it.”

... Kentucky faces ... North Carolina in Chapel Hill

Maybe the Air Force could be persuaded to have another incident with an accidental bomb drop (low yield) directly on the dean dome

Not the kind of thing you generally hear from a player whose team ended the previous season with a 1st round NIT loss.

But just think of the delicious prospect of 'themselves' losing smack dab on their own court...........

So we would have the team that can only be stopped by themselves going up against the team that can only be beaten by themselves.

Sounds like a pretty even match-up.

I'm gonna root for the team most likely to have the "Win" vacated later...
That way, no matter how you slice it - NOBODY actually wins...

Isit possible for BOTH of them to lose that game???

I seem to recall, a few years ago, that one of our players was quoted as saying that our practice team was the second best team in the ACC.

Kids say these things. C'est la vie.

Go to Hell, Carolina. Regardless, and in all circumstances.

Classic. Poythress has been pegged as a kid with all the talent in the world but a lack of fight and grit. Maybe Kentucky's finest sports psychologists have been encouraging him to think bigger and he is starting with his words? I heard that Cal recently hired famed performance-maximization specialist, Dr. Robert Morris, to try and inspire the young team.

In hell would I cheer for unc over UK. I will cheer as hard as I can for UK to beat unc by 50 and for Poythress to drop 30 on them. 9F9F

As much as I don't like Calasleazy or UK, comments like this in no way shape or form make me want to root for UNC@CH in any game. I know UK has a great class coming in but I still think they are overrated. I know they won 2 years ago with Anthony Davis but that team had a few key returning players as well. I don't think this years UK team has as much established talent returning.

If you've ever watched a UNC@CH basketball game with one of their fans you realize just how funny camion's post really is.

I understand the sentiment behind this. But man, Duke recruited Poythress hard as I recall, and the few times that I saw him playing for UK, he looks like an absolute beast. He has that Lebron-esque physique where he looks like a man among boys.

Good on him for barking a bit. It will make it all the more fun if they flame out again. But, I'd wager big money that one day Poythress is playing in The League.

UK fans can be insufferable and they are notorious for believing the hype. I'll root for UNC over UK any day of the week. My bread is buttered in the ACC.

Not just that, I was at last year's Duke/UK game and they just KNEW they were gonna win that game. Watching them leave early is one of the sweetest things I've seen in basketball. They had us outnumbered like 10 to 1 and left in droves. Yes sir, I'll have another.

Would now be a good time to recall the sturm und drang that befell this site in '11/'12 when the coaching staff backed off Poythress and went in other directions recruiting?

No, because if he'd come to Durham, he'd have already been a first team AA and we'd be celebrating title #5!!!!!

With Carolina and UK, my methodology is to root against whichever team has more to lose in any given season. This season, with UK likely to be top 5 in the nation and UNC lucky to be top 5 in the ACC...go Heels!!! (just got a bit sick to my stomach writing that, but whatever)

Tough one. I think I'll go with rooting for a 0-0 tie with lots of injuries.

OK, not the injuries. But still...

Poythress's comments don't bother me at all... I remember our 01-02 squad making some lofty comments about their potential... I think the word undefeated might've been tossed around along with the potential to average 100 points a game. Granted, we had proven talent and were coming off a national title... A far cry from a first round NIT exit. We don't know how the season will turnout for Kentucky but if they only go as far as our 01-02 squad did in the tourney it will be viewed as a disappointment by most.

It is really interesting where the heart lies when UNC is playing other hated rivals, until you experience it, you won't know how you truly feel. That being said, I can't think of a time when I rooted for them. I rooted like crazy for the Fab Five in the 1993 title game, for the title-era Terps whenever they played UNC, for Kentucky in the 2011 Regional Final and every other time they played....and I HATE all those teams. There must have been some time that I rooted for UNC either in an ACC tournament or NCAA tournament if I thought their win would eliminate a feared team that would potentially match up with Duke later on, but I can't think of it. 9F! all the time.

That cuts both ways, though. For UK, anything less than an undefeated season would be a disappointment, so beating UNC would mean next-to-nothing for them and their fans. By contrast, a UNC win over the UK Superteam would make their season. So the result that leads to the most pain and less pleasure for both fanbases would be a Kentucky win.

I get that his comments were not spoken very diplomatically, but I mean shouldn't every team have it as their their goal to go 40-0? You try to win every game. Realistically you understand that you will not, but it should still be your goal. I'd rather have a player who wants to go 40-0 than a guy who just accepts that a few losses are okay.

I'm with you. I think I can root for UNC in a particular situation, and then I find myself watching the game completely unable to root for them. It's physically impossible. I care about the ACC being great except in Orange County.

UK fans hate Duke with a rabidness that is somewhat incomprehensible. Duke beat them in the best college basketball game ever played, by one point, on a buzzer beater by a guy have a game for the ages, almost 22 years ago. They can't get over it which is ultimately kinda sad. Also - UK fans hate Duke and Duke fans without respecting Duke and Duke fans. Carolina - hates us and respects us. I won't cheer for Carolina, ever, because they have earned the right to be hated.

I root against UNC regardless, but for those considering rooting for the Heels in that game...

There's at least an outside chance UNC could miss the NCAA tourney this year, right? Until that possibility is exhausted, I think it would be prudent to root against them even if it means rooting for UK.

I've rooted for unc three times ever:

1990 second round NCAA game, against Oklahoma
1993 national championship, against Michigan
2000 second round NCAA game, against Stanford

Clearly when I root for unc the result is inevitably a unc win. Thus I will never do it again.

Or just an all-out drone strike.

See, here's the thing. Kentucky has an ------- for a coach, so it's hard to really blame his pupils for being them as well. I will cheer for Michigan State until my head falls off in Chicago if it means giving the Spartans even the slightest advantage.

Lets make no mistake about my dislike for Kentucky and their used car salesman coach. They are a ncaa endorsed aau team at best or a nba developmental team at worst. I have no love for Kentucky at all. With that said I don't car what kind of ridiculous things poythress said. There is circumstance what so ever I would ever root for unc. The only thing in this world that comes close to my love for Duke is the hatred I have for unc. If Kentucky goes unbeaten so be it. I wont pull for unc to be the team that gives Kentucky a L.

I will cheer for UNC over UK during the regular season.

Why?

Because it will help our SoS and potentially seeding in the tournament and is good for the stature of the ACC for UNC to win.

If they meet during the tournament, it's reverse and we can cheer for a better color blue.

I will pull hard for Kentucky and despise Unc-ch like nothing else in this world. For the last 21 years I have wanted to go to a unc-ch vs Kentucky basketball game sporting a Duke Laettner jersey. I would root all out for UK but would love knowing that they would be so upset by the jersey. It would be great either place but at UK would be best until I was beaten to a pulp though it would be with a smile on my face:)

You bring up a good point. To twist it a little....

If some enterprising Carolina fan were to wear a Carolina Jersey with LAETTNER on the back....that would be sure to piss off the UK faithful. Laettner too. But at least he would get a laugh out of the sign of respect and yet another chance to rub it in to UK.
