The process of selecting the US national team that will defend its title at the 2014 World Championship begins Labor Day weekend with a three-day camp, to be held at Goucher College outside Baltimore. Six current and former Blue Devils are among the 98 invitees. Duke is the only school to have two current players invited (only eight current college players were invited.) Here's the list of Duke guys (the complete list can be found at insidelacrosse.com).

Ned Crotty '10, Rochester Rattlers
Matt Danowski '08, Charlotte Hounds
Brendan Fowler '14
Dave Lawson '13, Rochester Rattlers
Mike Manley '12, Rochester Rattlers
Jordan Wolf '14

Former Duke assistant coach John Galloway, now an assistant at Providence, was also invited.

Any word on whether Brendan will skip football to attend this camp? Still, quite an honor for a walk-on--in the same year he is Final Four MOP, first team All-America, and invited to National Team tryout. Congratulations.

Brendan isn't playing football this year. For the first time he's getting lax scholarship money, which by NCAA rules counts against the 85 player football scholarship limit.
And we are at the 85 man limit now in football, so Fowler can't play. Glad he's getting money, he certainly has earned it.

First I've heard of that particular flavor of NCAA stupidity. Must be a reaction to K putting Jay Heaps on a basketball scholarship so that then Coach Rennie could spread his small pool around to more recruits.

I'll bet his parents are happy to get the help; they'll have two at Duke this year, and again during the 15-16 and 16-17 academic years if the youngest follows through on his verbal commitment.

Is there any news about what sort of injury this is and whether it is likely to linger?

Yeah, there are rules that are different for football and basketball. For example, can't use a track scholarship for a guy that runs track but also is recruited for and plays football. The idea is that some schools would use that loophole to increase their pool of scholarship athletes to more than 85 in football. Gets tricky in that a true walk-on for football could be receiving other financial aid and not count against the 85 scholarship limit, so long as he was not recruited for football.

After last weekend's tryout camp, which featured what observers called "the best pickup games in history," the candidate pool was reduced to 52.

Three of the five Duke guys who were under consideration (Jordan Wolf previously withdrew) made the initial cut: Matt Danowski, Dave Lawson, and Ned Crotty (who missed the tryout camp due to pneumonia). Former Duke assistant coach John Galloway also advanced.

Brendan Fowler and Mike Manley were removed from further consideration.
