On Monday, two teams announced their rosters for the Orlando Summer League and one more has a list for the Las Vegas Summer League:

Miles Plumlee will be with Indiana in Orlando:

Orlando has named their roster for their own league:

Can anybody come up with examples of other second-round rookies who didn't participate in summer league? What could that mean for Ryan?

I think it's for rehab reasons, so it probably doesn't mean anything.

Given the context of Kupchak's comment, I think this is right. Only three more months to training camp, and they don't want to rush Kelly's foot. Here's the article: http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lakers/post/_/id/36801/lakers-draft-dukes-ryan-kelly-in-second-round.

Kupchak makes some nice comments about Kelly's viability as an NBA player.

If anything, I bet it helps him. Had he played in summer league and stunk, it might have hurt him. Because they'll be able to sign him really cheap, I am sure he'll get a contract. If Howard leaves, that team is going to be in mega rebuild mode. Next year is a huge draft and there are huge free agent summers coming up. If things look really bad, maybe Kobe shuts it down for a much longer period of time and they really blow it up.

Dev11

I figured it wouldn't hurt him. The Lakers must know his injury history and are fine with him rehabbing and having him at training camp. I know that some second-rounders get cut before camp.

Thanks for the continued fine service to the board. Outstanding work.

As for Ryan Kelly, still confused at why anyone thought Ryan would be lacing them up and hooping this summer. The guy just had surgery on his bum foot. Like MP3 he will be rehabbing all summer trying to get back to 100% health before the start of the regular season. Playing this summer went out the window the minute he went under the knife.

Interesting that Drew Gordon is on the Kings and the Jazz rosters.

It is a smart move actually. Getting seen by as many execs as possible is a good thing so signing with one Orlando Team and one Las Vegas team (or finding a team that plays in both like Miami) might get you a better chance at a training camp invite. Gordon is more or less a known commodity in Europe, so I think he is trying to position himself as well as possible for an NBA gig. I think that was Jon Scheyer's plan last year.

Mason had a good debut. Going against Andre Drummond much of the game, Mason recorded a Double/Double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Overall I thought he played well. Shot it well from the Free Line too. Detroit took the game by 9.

EJ Singler got a few minutes with Detroit. Kyle was there but did not play.

Some sort of tear below his calf.

I was watching the game...didn't realize it was so serious. Crap.

Nice to have a full day of basketball! Harkless (not a rookie, I know), Olynyk, Oladipo were all impressive today. Trey Burke was underwhelming, not sure he has the physical gifts to succeed in the NBA. Mason had a great game, although he missed a dunk. Miles had a very solid game too...I imagine he will get a lot more minutes with the Pacers letting Hansbrough walk. I liked watching Wyatt from Temple -- I hope he finds a spot in the league.

Obviously, can't make judgments from one game of summer league, but I am glad to be postponing my baseball viewing until after the all-star break ;)

Man, that sounds ominous. Assuming this precludes his making a NBA roster this year, I really hope he gets another shot down the line. Maybe he can draw inspiration from Kyle's circuitous path to the Pistons.

Good luck Nolan. We are pulling for you here in Duke Nation.

Mason had good and bad moments. He was talking on defense and aware of all the players on the court. On the other hand, he got burned badly numerous times on pick and rolls. Had some good dunks and he passed the ball very well. He did have 15 rebounds, but he really didn't rebound in traffic very well - he was out-fought for rebounds more than once. He is a big guy, but Andre Drummond made him look almost small. Nice start, though.

Miles was beast-like. He just looked bigger than everyone else. Had some nice offensive moves, but also missed on some short jumpers. He was the difference for Indiana even being in the game. While I didn't see the two together, Miles just looks much larger than his brother on the court right now. Six blocks, including a couple of dunk attempts.

With some exceptions, neither summer team really tried to establish either Plumlee in the low blocks. When they did, both of them had some nice moves.

Co-sign! While it is easy to get seduced by summer league performances, Miles looked like a pro today. The announcers said the Pacers want him to rebound and play defense and he looked committed to that today.

It will be interesting to see if Miles can replace Hansbrough in the rotation now that the Pacers have let Hansbrough go. From a size and athleticism standpoint, Miles is clearly ahead of Hansbrough. And given that Hansbrough no longer can dominate with strength/will, the difference in skill level may be minimized.

As a backup PF/C, I think Miles can be a very solid option. Perhaps that is what the Pacers are thinking as well.

I watched all of the Pacers summer league games last year and Miles looked really good. I was really surprised that he spent most of the season in the D-League. Hopefully this year is a breakout year for him. With his size and athleticism, he should fit in well with the NBA style of play.

He didn't look great playing pick and roll defense yesterday, but Summer League is for working on that stuff. Obviously, when he is on the floor, he'll be one of those guys that the opposing defenses can ignore in favor of doubling someone else/playing NBA zone. The question will be whether or not Miles can make them pay by becoming a beast on the offense glass. Psycho T was obviously a major headache in that respect, but, as you point out, didn't have the size to cause big problems. If you put Psycho T's motor and drive into Miles's body, that could be a real impact player. Psycho T obviously had a much better around the basket offensive game with those put backs, Miles will have to improve there, too. Bottom line, with the CBA, these guys now only have 2 year contracts so its time to show something.

I noticed that Miles was sometimes overly aggressive going after the shot block, leaving his man for an easy bucket on several occasions. Part of that was the man guarding the ball was getting beat off the dribble, but Miles needs to be smarter about challenging shots.

Mason had a very good game today- 23 and 9 with 8-8 from the floor, including a nice face up jumper and 7-10 from the line. He is still a very average defender but he can run the floor and is has definitely improved around the basket. I am sure his new coach was impressed with what he saw out there.

You can check the boxscores on NBA.com or in awhom's (awesome) posts. EJ is getting some run, but not a ton. Kyle isn't playing, presumably b/c he doesn't need to. In fact, I was surprised he was on the pistons roster at all. Summer League is for helping give some more NBA-level experience to guys with potential that need it, and for seeing who teams want to bring to camp. Kyle started 72 games and played almost 30mpg last year...he got plenty of real game experience then and will obviously be at camp.

E.J. has been getting a few scattered minutes so far. I would guess that Kyle was brought along for practice purposes. Obviously there is a lot more going on in Orlando than we get to see on TV. Most of the teams bring in all the players that they are allowed to.

Well it is not very often that one gets to commit 7 fouls in a basketball game much less 10, so I figured it was my duty to bestow an appropriate honor on the luck few.

Given his stellar performance in the post, most defenses we encountered would give him that mid-range J all day. When Ryan went out, that would have been the perfect time to demonstrate a jump shot.

The Bulls have announced their roster for the Vegas Summer League:
http://www.nba.com/bulls/news/bulls-announce-nba-summer-league-2013-roster.html

In a slightly interesting note, "Little" Boozer is on the squad. Overall, it's a pretty odd looking team. Very undersized at C. Only a handful of guys (Teague, Goudelock, Snell, Murphy, Thomas) have a realistic shot at making the team this Fall.

I would bet his brother being there had something to do with it..."hey coach, can I go to orlando and workout and watch my brother play?"

I would bet his brother being there had something to do with it..."hey coach, can I go to orlando and workout and watch my brother play?"

This article, focused on the Josh Smith free agent signing, makes it sound like most of the young Pistons, including Greg Monroe, are in Orlando and that they are having a bunch of practices.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/pistons/2013/07/07/detroit-josh-smith-kentavious-caldwell-pope-greg-monroe-andre-drummond/2497145/

One cool aspect of the Orlando summer league, mentioned in the article, is that the standings are based on a points system - 3 points for every win but 1 additional point for each quarter won. That's pretty cool, a nice incentive for teams to focus on playing hard no matter the score - as if these kids, desperate to make an impression, would ever dog it - but the attempt to showcase often takes away from team goals.

Also, where does everyone stand on the tshirt-with-sleeves jerseys sported by some teams? We may have covered this when the Warriors busted them out this season, but I give them an emphatic thumbs down.

So you can earn between 4 and 7 points in a win or between 0 and 3 points in a loss... I guess it is possible to only get 3 points in a win. If the score is tied at the end of each quarter and no points are awarded for winning the overtime. Btw, is there overtime in summer league games?

I don't know. If there is, each team should just select a player and it's one-on-one full court and first basket wins, much like a lacrosse "Braveheart"

If a quarter ends tied, each team gets half a point.

That's also playing the majority of his minutes against a real NBA starter in Dion Waiters (although not a great defender). And he certainly didn't have to worry about Tyler Zeller blocking his shot on drives.

Not that you can take summer league too seriously, but I think Austin just needed another year. He was good-but-not-great in college, and had trouble with finishing and defense, which only get harder at the NBA level.

He probably has some of that figured out (even just through personal development), so good for him.

He was actually one of the first cuts for Poland, which probably freed up some time for him to participate in the Summer League. He is a free agent, but there are plenty of rumors surrounding his next destination including a return to Virtus Roma and there were suggestions that he had already signed for the Polish champions (which he denied). It would be good to see him play for a team where he could expect to get starter's minutes. He played quite a lot early in the season in Italy, but kept seeing his playing time cut. If he can sign for a team like Stelmet Zielona Gora, he would at least get a chance at Euroleague play (Virtus Roma qualified but decided to give up their place).

The theme of lopsidedness shows no sign of subsiding... Miami 45 NYK 18... 1:30 left in the half. I guess all of the teams didn't get the elimination format memo

Tanking is a skill that must be practiced ...

In case you haven't noticed, at least one of the Morris twins gets a technical foul each summer league game for arguing calls. Arguing calls... in summer league.

Oddly enough, some of the calls they are arguing are on behalf of the other brother. I wonder if that is some other kind of previously undiscovered twin power. Either way, the technicals combined with Markieff's already excessive fouling helped land him in the 7 foul club. Also, the NBA seems not to have figured out that it would be helpful to determine which Morris is which in the boxscores.

It definitely is a super power to argue calls in summer league.

I figure they just think the refs will be confused as to which one got T'd up.

Also, it would be awesome if one twin sported a goatee and the other didn't, so that one could be the evil twin.

Nick Minnerath is listed with 7 fouls. I do not know if it is a misprint or if they changed back to 10 fouls for the consolation round so I will spare him repeat offender status for now.

Tomorrow's quarterfinal schedule is further up the thread.
