This is awesome, as they jumped from 19th place after the final winter calculation. Unfortunately, they may not be able to stay in that place as six sports remain to be scored, including baseball, softball, and women's rowing, where Duke will get no points, men's golf, where Duke may get a few points, but not many, for its regional participation, and men's and women's track and field, where Duke has only four competitors (Curtis Beach, Austin Gamble, Cydney Ross, and Anima Banks) and thus will garner at best relatively few director's cup points.

Still, Duke is currently more than 100 points ahead of Georgia, in 9th place, and 160 ahead of Texas A & M, in 10th, with other teams trailing behind that. So they have a realistic shot at a top 10 finish and a very likely chance of a top 15 finish.

The Duke men are currently in first place in the Capital One Cup (thanks to the LAX championship), which heavily skews towards very top finishes as opposed to the Director's Cup which awards points more evenly.

Here's the link (http://www.capitalonecup.com/assets/standings/complete-capital-one-cup-standings.pdf). Duke's main competitors are cold weather schools (Indiana, Mich,Lullville, Syracuse, Notre Dame) that may not do much in baseball, track or golf.

The women are in ninth; UNC is first.

As a fan of all things Duke, our all around athletic excellence is one of the things of which I'm most proud.

Congrats to our student-athletes on yet another successful season. Had we the financial (see: scholarship) resources of Stanford, I have little doubt we'd be a consistent comptetitor to the Cardinal for this award.

Unfortunately, Indiana is in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. It won its first game today on a walk-off home run, but I feel fairly confident that Indiana can stay out of the Top Ten (and thus not receive points).

By the way, Louisville is not a cold-weather school. It is, rather, in a subtropical climate (the zone though is large, stretching from New York City to just South of Tampa). With that said, Louisville is far enough behind us, that they are no threat. The only real threat is Indiana, as they still have baseball.

Indiana entered the baseball tournament at #12 in the RPI and stand a very good chance of making a title run. They also have 11 athletes competing at Track and Field nationals.

Matt, thanks for the update on Indiana. Facts are always better than supposition. I am, however, having a bit of a puzzle about Louisville being "subtropical." Here is a link to a slew of climate (https://www.google.com/search?q=climate+zones+usa+map&biw=1280&bih=717&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=0M-pUZfrOabV0QHev4D4AQ&ved=0CC0QsAQ)maps on the US -- none of which seem to group NYC, Louisville and Tampa in any category.

On most maps (that use Koppen classifications), Tampa, Louisville, and Philly are all considered subtropical. NYC is technically subtropical, but it has only been considered so since 2011, when the average temperatures were last updated. They will be updated again in 2021.

Louisville's position shows that they will impact the ACC in more sports than just football and men's hoops. They are very, very good in women's basketball, men's soccer, baseball and other sports.

Although I don't much about Koppen, the Wikipedia definition of the large area you mention does not use the term "subtropical." Moreover, any grid that places Tampa, Florida and the Ohio Valley in the same climate zone is of doubtful relevance for year-round play of such sports as golf and baseball. But, this isn't worth an argument.
