John Davidson - By the Time I get to Phoenix ...

You're doing this on purpose to compel me to betray my considerable age ...

Glen Campbell. Sure, he looked like John Davidson, and they both devolved into cheesey TV personas, but Glen owned the song. Since nobody is really a Phoenix native, he might as well have the city.

Lol, I lived through his heyday and had to look him up to help me remember who he was. Glen Campbell, now there's a singer worth associating with Phoenix, and maybe Albuquerque.

Johnny Cash has an edge on virtually everybody mentioned, with I've Been Everywhere, Man:

Unfortunately, an acqaintance of mine has memorized this song. Fortunately, he has only sung it in my presence only once.:)

Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota,
Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma..."

True, even though Nirvana is not from Seattle. Their sound was quickly associated with Seattle due to a number of other bands in the area that essentially rode on Nirvana's success, including (but not limited to) The Screaming Trees, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, etc.

It would be hard to dispute that North Carolina should be represented by James Taylor and his song "Carolina on my mind." My guess is that he has performed that song thousands of times (maybe tens of thousands of times) all over the world and has been a great ambassador for the state wherever he goes (although he hasn't actually lived in NC since high school, I believe).

Of course, people who live in Western Massachusetts where James now lives with his wife and two sons like to claim him as one of their own, especially when he sings Sweet Baby James at local concerts:

Now the first of December was covered with snow
And so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
Though the Berkshires seemed dream-like on account of that frosting
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go

Well, if you guys don't mind a little ancient history, two of the great big bands of the 40s traced their roots to Duke and UNC.

The Duke band was led by Duke student Les Brown. Originally, it was Les Brown and his Blue Devils ... but it became famous as Les Brown and his Band of Renown. The band was popular before the war, but not at a level with Glenn Miller or Tommy Dorsey. But towards the end of WWII, Brown's band took off, thanks to a young female vocalist named Dinah Shore. She sang -- and Brown's band backed up -- one of the biggest hits of the 40s -- Sentimental Journey. Later, the band backed up Bob Hope on many of his USO tours -- it was during one of these that Les Brown introduced a singer who was discovered by Hope -- Tony Bennett. The band appeared in several movies (including the original "The Nutty Professor") and was a major force on TV (the house band for both the Steve Allen Show -- which was the original Tonight Show -- and for the Dean Martin variety show.

Les Brown is dead, but the Band of Renown is still in action, now led by his son, Les Brown Jr.

Their "rival" in the 40s was Kay Kyser's band. Kyser grew up in Rocky Mount and was a UNC cheerleader who took over a band in Chapel Hill in the late 30s. Whereas Brown's band was a typical (although superior) big band of the era, Kyser's was more of a musical novelty group that styled itself as "Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge. They had a great novelty hit during the war "Three Little Fishes" and a minor hit right after Pearl Harbor with the patriotic ditty "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition". Kyser's comic sidekick-- Ish Kabbible -- became a star in the 40s too.

Kyser's band also appeared in movies and on TV.

I don't think either band was famous for a song that highlighted Duke or UNC or their North Carolina roots, but both were HUGE names in the music business.

Doris Day, not Dinah Shore.

When I was a student back in the early 70s we found boxes of 78rpm albums (about 10 or 12 records in a box set) of Les Brown and the Blue Devils performing the Blue and White, Fight Song, Alma Mater etc., in the Chapel basement. A few years later, the administration found them and sold them through the alumni magazine.

That's my fault for not clearly setting what I was looking for, so it all went off the rails from the get go due to my lack of clarity. Yeah, when you hear a certain singer, what city or part of the country do you think of? The singer need not be from that area of the country. And it somehow seems too easy if there is a song with a location mentioned in the title and say that's the answer. Sometimes it all dovetails: Sinatra is from Hoboken, sang a "NY" song, and represents NYC. The Dead for SF (or maybe Joan Baez). Bob Seger for Detroit (though many other contenders mentioned above). Some Shag group would be the sound of North Myrtle Beach, perhaps .... or the The Drifters or something. When you hear Johnny Cash, what state do you think of? Same for Hank Williams.

An easier, more straightforward task that does involve discrete song titles or lyrics: can we come up with a good A to Z list of songs involving girls' names: Amy by Pure Prarie League, Melissa by The Allman Brothers, Veronica by Elvis Costello ... may have to reach to find a song that mentions a girl's name in the lyrics but that name may not be the actual song title .... Good Golly Miss Molly .... Maybeline, why can't you be true ...

...Cat Stevens Peace Train

A Duke classmate had, as his answering machine message, a snippet of "Peace Train", and then a snippet of "Crazy Train", and then a crash noise, and then him tearfully saying between sobs that the peace train and the crazy train had collided, and to leave a message at the beep.

The "I can't believe no one has mentioned this one" country song

Orange Blossom Special -- by just about everybody

The best rock song for driving your car on a long trip with the stereo cranked up (about 9 minutes long)

Hellbound Train -- Savoy Brown**

The best harmonica playing ever . . . in a country rock song

Train Train -- Blackfoot**

** If you have never heard these last two songs, I highly recommend you google them and give a listen.

"Sweet Lorraine" - Patty Griffin

Brilliant song by a brilliant singer and songwriter!

May as well add a couple more applicable Patty Griffin tunes:

Mary in homage to both the Virgin Maryand her Grandmother
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOxpvKuEruk
And Christina about the tragic life and death of Christina Onasis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v3bRTTSYKw

Patty will be at the Haw River Ballroom in Graham NC on Saturday (also The Orange Peel in Asheville on Thursday) so, if you are in the area and have never seen Robert Plant's blushing new bride, prepare to be blown away!
