This 6-8 Duke graduate (2009) is a rookie first baseman making his major league debut this season. He was drafted by the Padres and has been a successful minor leaguer. Houston got him in spring training as a Rule 5 player and then waived him. The A's claimed him and he's made the team (so far). He's Duke's all-time home run hitter and second in all time batting average.

Tonight was his third major league game--his first starting assignment. He's had two hits earlier. Tonight he hit the ball very hard--but they turned into hard outs. His reputation as a fielder is not high, but he did fine. The main play was a double down the line that he dove for but couldn't flag down.

Too early to say he'll be a success, but he's on the field. He is really playing behind Brandon Moss, who is a veteran player--certainly a proven fielder and power hitter. So Freiman has some hills to climb. Will be fun to watch.
