According to Foreign Policy, the rest of the world hates the US for the same reasons most college basketball fans hate Duke....

Really, a terrible article. I would argue that it's pompous things like this article that are more the reason that people hate Duke.

Let's play ball! Beat Maryland!

Go Duke!

I disagree with your first point but agree with your second! Let's Go DUKE! Beat the Terps! Go To HELL carolina!

I like and agree with the author's analogy that the United States is like Duke, and why so much of the world hates us, mostly for unfounded, and fundamentally wrong, reasons. No political/public policy intent implied. :) http://www.crazietalk.net/ourhouse/images/smilies/devil9f.gif http://www.crazietalk.net/ourhouse/images/smilies/devil9f.gif

As long as we agree on the big issues. :D

So on the link - my takeaway was that "to root against Duke is UnAmerican". I can live with that.
I hope we put something on UMd that Ajax wont take off...

Just like how the rest of the world sees Americans as arrogant, self-centered, rich, disconnected with the reality of third world living, and a bully to boot, the rest of basketball sees Duke as arrogant, self-centered, rich, disconnected with the reality of cheering on an average basketball program, and a bully to boot. Ok, I'll buy that argument. But I don't think being all those things is necessarily a good thing.

Nor is it necessarily a bad thing. All in the perception, and the way you define your terms. In a chaotic world, with no "leviathan", a strong nation willing to take on the role (responsibly) of world cop may be the right answer per basic IR theory. In a multipolar world, there is often at best inertia and at worst chaos.

Of course, I am not extending this to NCAAB, but in the context of geopolitics, being the strongest, with the willingness to use that strength for the greater good is not necessarily a bad thing.
