With the Heat tying a record franchise winning streak, I was looking through an article about winning streaks and NBA franchises according to this article:

http://sportige.com/nba-franchises-longest-winning-streaks-03-2013/

Do you notice something? Shane Battier's winning ways have contributed to not one, not two, but THREE current franchise records for winning-streaks.

He helped an injury-plagued Rockets team win 22 straight games in 2007-2008. In 2003-2004, he helped the Memphis Grizzlies to a modest 9 game winning streak, which is still the record for this now-competitive playoff team. Now, in 2012-2013 the Heat have won 14 straight, are leading Minnesota as we speak for the 15th win tonight. He has shot 60% from 3-pt land averaging 5 attempts per game during this streak.

That is kind of nuts, a unique combination of circumstance and great play, to have participated in 10% of the the NBA franchise records for win streaks.

Mods feel free to push this into the NBA thread if you want, but I wanted to give Shane some visible publicity!

What position does Shane play? Winner!

Shane is the consummate pro. He just does what is needed to win. I have watched some of the last few games and Shane is always there in winning time hitting a three- getting a stop or grabbing a rebound. He is a big reason the Heat is winning- make no mistake about it.

This seems like as good a time as any to bring this article (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/magazine/15Battier-t.html?pagewanted=all)back: The No-Stats All Star by Michael Lewis.

Here we have a basketball mystery: a player is widely regarded inside the N.B.A. as, at best, a replaceable cog in a machine driven by superstars. And yet every team he has ever played on has acquired some magical ability to win.

Battier’s game is a weird combination of obvious weaknesses and nearly invisible strengths. When he is on the court, his teammates get better, often a lot better, and his opponents get worse — often a lot worse. He may not grab huge numbers of rebounds, but he has an uncanny ability to improve his teammates’ rebounding. He doesn’t shoot much, but when he does, he takes only the most efficient shots. He also has a knack for getting the ball to teammates who are in a position to do the same, and he commits few turnovers. On defense, although he routinely guards the N.B.A.’s most prolific scorers, he significantly I'm a real wanker for saying this.reduces their shooting percentages. At the same time he somehow improves the defensive efficiency of his teammates — probably, Morey surmises, by helping them out in all sorts of subtle ways. “I call him Lego,” Morey says. “When he’s on the court, all the pieces start to fit together. And everything that leads to winning that you can get to through intellect instead of innate ability, Shane excels in. I’ll bet he’s in the hundredth percentile of every category.”

I don't know. Have you seen the Miami Heat "Harlem Shake" video? Shane is the "horsetronaut". I kid you not -- shane in the horsemask wearing an astronaut suit moonwalking around. This should be photoshopped in front of the presidential seal. Said, "the horse head is my go to, its a crowd-pleaser" or somesuch. I take it he is a Redditor.

My friends,
I got to meet him while he was at Duke, my son starting his first year there. And also happened to have a basketball. That I just got at the book store there. He was walking around the dorms. We stopped, and I got out and just said hi. We chatted a little, told him how proud of his play we were and I thanked him for being there for Duke. And asked for his autograph. He struck that one time a very pleasant, kind human being. He would give his arm for a person.
That brief moment, tells me so much about him. And I was right.

Thank you for posting! Allowed me to talk about one of my Duke moments.
Have nice day my friends,

Jimmy

Scene: Presidential debate, not so many years from now.

MODERATOR: Senator Battier, let me take you back to 2013. It was a different time. Lance Armstrong was only 25 percent cyborg then. Jim Boeheim did not yet have the Google technology to zap lasers out of his eyes and maim reporters he did not like. And the "Harlem Shake" was inspiring thousands of people to post their own copycat videos on the Internet.

SENATOR SHANE BATTIER: Wow, the Internet. That takes me back. The first of Saint Albert's three miracles.

MODERATOR: Yes, Senator. But as you campaign to be this country's next President, your opposition has unearthed this video and questioned your ability to be a serious leader. What do you say to those voters who are just discovering you portrayed in such an unflattering light?

SENATOR SHANE BATTIER: Thank you for that question. Well, as you said, it was a different time. But I disagree that this video depicts me in any sort of negative way. I was a professional basketball player then, unlike my opponent, and I served in a veteran role. It was important to share with others our commitment to teamwork, both on and off the court. We worked very hard to win games, and I see nothing wrong with having some fun in our downtime.

MODERATOR: But you were dressed as some sort of... horse astronaut?

SENATOR SHANE BATTIER: I called it the "horsetronaut." (Laughs along with town hall participants.) Of course it looked silly. But it also foreshadowed two of the biggest issues in my political platform going forward: animal rights, and a renewed commitment to space exploration. And, I might add, I moved pretty well back then.

(Applause.)

MODERATOR: Rebuttal?

VICE PRESIDENT DOUG GOTTLIEB: No argument from me. Even with a horse head and a space suit, he was alarmingly athletic!

What I want to know is what President we would've had to put up for 8 years to have a Vice President Gottlieb running.

For my money, the most impressive wonning streak of Shane's illustrious basketball career -- at any level -- was Duke's streak of 24 ACC road victories from 1998-2001. That's three full seasons without losing a road game in conference play. That's unheard of. It could be one of those records that not only never gets broken, but that nobody else really ever comes close to breaking, like Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak. I don't think it's a coincidence that it happened during Shane's tenure at Duke.
