Wow, what a shot. That guy who just lobbed it up with time to spare is going to be having a hard week. If those were the Pac 12 refs, they would have said "no good" after reviewing the replay for 15 minutes....;)

Hadn't see one quite like this.

Narrative: with 2.9 seconds left, New Rochelle trailed 60-58 and had the ball on the end line. The inbounder threw a pass just past midcourt that was intercepted by Mount Vernon. The Mt. Vernon player flipped the ball up in the air in celebration. The ball went into the New Rochelle backcourt. A New Rochelle player grabbed the ball and heaved it 3/4 of the court. It swished. The ball left his hand with 0.1 seconds on the clock.

Great clip! thanks, Roy.

I don't think it was THAT bad. He was lobbing a pass to his teammate. Still awful for him, and he won't sleep for a week, but it wasn't nearly as bad as Ruffin to Peterson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5bqF4VDSx4) from a few years ago.

Kid on sports center that hit the shot just said he was a big Duke fan.

Not only does he make 3/4 court shots, he's smart too!

It's certainly "never over 'til it's over".

End of game rules.

1. If you steal the opponent's inbound pass and there are less than three seconds left in the game, HOLD ONTO THE BALL.

2. If for some reason you are unable to comprehend/adhere to rule number one, throw the ball VERY HIGH INTO THE AIR.

That is all.

First of all, absolutely ridiculous ending. But I think the URL's and titles saying "You won't find a buzzer beater more incredible than this one" are a bit hyperbole.

My all time #1 is still:

Sure it's D-III and 8 years ago, but double overtime, intentional missed second free throw, 90 foot shot - just crazy.

Some interesting additional context and info...

The venue was the Westchester County Center in White Plains, NY. This was the NY State Sectional portion of the State Tournament. NY is divided into 11 sections plus the PSAL (NYC Public League) and the CHSAA (NYC Catholic School League). The sectionals are the first layer of the state tournament and all of the schools battle it out for the Non NYC State Championship. The PSAL and CHSAA battle it out for a NYC Champion, and then the two Champions meet for a Federation Championship. The semifinals and finals of the state are played up in Glens Falls, NY, near the capital of Albany. Section 1 basically covers Westchester, Putnam and Rockland Counties and the sectional semis and finals are always held at the County Center.

I say all of this because I grew up in Westchester and played high school ball. For most kids in this area, "Getting to the County Center", which is where the sectional semis and finals is played, is the ultimate. Programs like Mount Vernon, which lost the game we are discussing, and has recently turned out such great college players as Ben Gordon and Kevin Jones (WVU), set their sites on Glens Falls, but the County Center holds a special place for all local players.

Anyway, Elton Brand from Peekskill High School passed through the County Center in his sophomore year on the way to leading his team to the non NYC state championship before losing in the Federation Championship. His Junior year, he led his team through the County Center up to Glens Falls where they won both levels of the State Championship. When he was a senior, another state title was expected. I had attended Brand's first state title game in Glens Falls (I am from Peekskill) and was determined to follow his senior year playoff march closely. First stop, the Section 1 semi-finals against Poughkeepsie in the County Center. Sadly, it was to be Elton's last official high school game. Poughkeepsie double and triple teamed him and he missed countless free throws coming down the stretch in a huge upset.

All I could think when that New Rochelle v Mount Vernon game went viral and made SportsCenter was that Elton must be watching it in some hotel room and thinking, "Damn, that's where I played my last high school game!" Hopefully he was thinking about the trophies he hoisted there, but human nature suggests otherwise.
