I apologize if this has been posted, but I just saw it on the front page of the NYT.

11 yr old, 5th grader, 4'5". Playing varsity ball already. I guess he was upgraded to varsity when he scored 91 on his middle school team.

They list him at 4'5", but I'm betting he's closer to 4'4".
Needs to work on his mid-range jumper.

Can't dunk- he is sufficiently unathletic to play at Duke.

Hard to read this story and not feel like you need to take a shower afterwards to wash off the slime. Sigh.


Julian has been taught to believe in Jesus, and in himself, and he believes he will play in the NBA. "I don't have a Plan B," he told me. As (his father) Jamie put it: "That's going to be the natural progression."

Could Julian be good? Sure.

Will he be great? Impossible to say.

It's not his fault. His voice hasn't changed.

We could probably make an Off-Topic thread comparing sports parents to stage parents to determine which are worse.

For me, the saddest part of the story was learning that Jerry Penacoli (http://www.wfla.com/story/21796515/jerry-penacoli), a former actor and tabloid TV reporter, is now the co-host of the morning talk show for Tampa's NBC affiliate. It was like when I first saw former CNN guy Fred Hickman (http://www.nola.com/tv/index.ssf/2011/08/wvue_hires_former_cnn_sports_a.html) doing sports on my Fox affiliate.

Old TV personalities never die; they just go local.
