SARATOGA SPRINGS — Rich Johns, long-time Saratoga Springs teacher and coach, announced Monday that his Act With Respect Always program (AWRA) has recently been endorsed by Mike Krzyzewski, Head Basketball Coach at Duke University and the winningest coach in NCAA Division I history.

"I am humbled and honored that Coach Krzyzewski has endorsed Act With Respect Always," said Johns, who founded the program two years ago. "He's a great coach, but more importantly he's a person who has done so much for so many people over the years."

He has impacts in many ways

I was remarking on Facebook that Dean Smith retired on my 21st birthday (10/9/1997); were Coach K to do the same at age 66 approaching a February birthday, this would be his last season. Given his health problems from 1994-2002 (back, hip1, hip2), we've been extraordinarily fortunate to hang onto him this long, and hopefully for a while longer.

He's closing in on what I consider Dean's most impressive record, the ACC career wins total. (364-344). With health and non-retirement, you're looking at about two more seasons. I think I broke this down a couple years ago. This isn't quite fair to Dean, because he coached in 12-game, 14-game and just a few 16-game conference seasons, whereas Krzyzewski has coached in 14-game and 16-game seasons. I'll see if I can find the post where I rolled ACCT wins into the totals.

Okay, according to the old thread, closed when Krzyzewski hit 903, Dean Smith won 422 league games if you include the ACCT. K came into 2009-10 with 342, including ACCT games. He won 13 each of the following three years, and 8 so far this year. So that's 47. We won the ACCT in 2010 and 2011, so that's six more. We went 1-1 last year. So that's 55. So the score is 422-397.

That is outrageously amazing on Dean's part. The only argument you can make is that the ACC has been harder to win in from 1998-present than it was in 1962-80, and I'm not sure I'd make that argument.

Well, there's another, which is that Coach K loses four seasons at Army. Maybe that offsets Dean's shorter seasons.

I may start a new thread about the ACC wins pursuit.

That means he's literally coached half of his life at Duke.
