The Terps come to Cameron tonight. This is probably our 2nd biggest game of the year (beside the UConn game). Gametime is 7. It will be shown on ESPN2, but we need a really huge crowd to cheer the team on. The Durham Herald-Sun had a coupon in yesterday's and today's paper where you can buy 2 tickets for $4.00. What a deal!

I am very excited about this game! #5 vs. #7!!! May be the last time in awhile we get to see this team in CIS. What a shame. Brenda always has her women coached up, as we know all too well. This should be a good one. LET'S GO DUKE!!!

What did we do, as a nation, to be afflicted with the announcing career of Rebecca Lobo?

I'm surprised Brenda lasted as long as she did without a T. Right from the tip she was just berating the refs over and over. It's one thing to get animated at a call you don't like, but she was calling them over and just yelling at them for 30 seconds at a time. Her face was about to match her players' jerseys.

I agree! What exactly did she do to get tossed?

I thought the Maryland players played a bit like football players. Thomas was shoving people all over the floor. That offensive board where she literally shoved Wells (I believe) out of the way was insane.

Great win by the women. I really love watching Chelsea Gray play. Haley Peters did a phenomenal job defensively.

Great game by DWB. It was great to see us take over after Maryland went ahead.

I would love to see what finally sent Brenda Frees over the edge. I can't say I was surprised she got two technicals; what I was surprised at is that she got them at the same time, toward the end of the game. It seemed like she was so high-strung she could have gotten a T walking out of the tunnel.

I didn't hear exactly what it was. The announcers didn't seem to know either. It appeared to happen during the commercial and the cameras didn't catch it. Maybe someone at the game caught what happened. The refs seemed to let her get away with yelling at them a lot. My guess is that after that run, Brenda saw something she didn't like and took it too far. I've read that a lot of officials in multiple sports are more willing to tolerate criticizing calls over criticizing the refs. This is a total guess, but I think Brenda crossed that line and started saying something about the refs themselves and not their calls. She might have even used some choice language. Either way, it must have been really bad to get two T's in a row. That's pretty rare.

On the ESPN post-game, Kara Lawson really tore into Brenda about the timing of the Ts, and I think she was right to do so. We went from up nine to up 13 with barely four minutes to go. Huge.

Excellent win- tight game and then Duke took control. A little cushion for the regular season race but need to go to Maryland in a couple weeks. Still- the Duke Maryland games on the women's side have been entertaining for a while now- too bad they are going away.

Yes, I would love to hear from someone at the game. I watched on TV, and I couldn't really figure out what was going on.
Brenda always acts a little batty, but she was in rare form tonight. I almost feel like her behavior kind of guided her players' performance on the floor - very physical. I am not a fan of Brenda, but I respect what she has done to help raise awareness/funds for cancer research after her son was diagnosed with leukemia.

Thanks for the info!

She got the first T at the under 4 TO (her T actually stopped play that generated the TO.) The only rational thing I can think of on that play, which was a two on one break, was she thought Chelsea walked when she paused to let the Terp play go by before shooting. She then didn't let up during the TO, got in Dee Kanter's face for a while, then went to the bench area to rant some more. She was T'd by the shorter ref with the long dark hair (Cameron Inouye ?), who was around the baseline when she made the call. Brenda then sat down on the bench, and I wasn't sure she was going to leave.

The refs set the tone on (I believe) the second Terp offensive play, which was clearly a push. The first time down, they were called for an obvious push, and Brenda went ballistic, which I think caused the refs not to call the second. Thomas literally threw down Chloe or Richa (don't remember which) on a rebound, which caused Haley to get her second foul. The first few plays of the second half were worse. But once we finally realized that they weren't going to call anything and started taking it harder to the rim, we (OK, Chelsea) took over.

Chelsea took the team on her back in the second half, and to my mind clinched ACC POY over Thomas. (Yes, there's six more games to go.) We were turning the ball over too much, Alexis in particular trying to do too much (it's late in your freshman year Alexis, time enough to learn there's four other players out there in Pantone 287 and white.) We missed a lot of shots, clearly bothered by Maryland's physical game. Elizabeth settled down and played great defense in the post, keeping the bigger Turtles from making too many easy baskets. Trish came off the bench with another strong effort, 17 points, and good smart defense. If Rutan doesn't hit four threes in the first half, it's not close. But we need to put the hammer down and push things more. And also to adjust better to the flow of the game. Of course, Maryland IS a very good team, if not deep. Great effort, it'll be a battle in College Park for the rematch on Feb. 24th.

What a fun game. We had a great crowd with lots of cheering students. Thanks, guys, for coming out to the game.

Brenda had been berating the refs all game, even though we had just as many bad calls our way (the refs were just horrible). She was mad after Chelsea threw a screen (probably illegal) against 1 of her players that allowed us to score on a fast break. There was an immediate time out and she went off. What was odd is that it wasn't the ref she was chewing out who called the T but the one across the court. There was no indication that 2 Ts were called, until security came over to the MD bench. I would love to know what she said.

Chelsea, Tricia, & Elizabeth were warriors against the physical play. Alison didn't score much, but she was really tough, too.

Great win!!! GTHC

Always great to beat the turtles and their big mouthed coach. Chelsea was a warrior.

Yes, Brenda was in rare form from the get go. Screaming like a mad woman. I also had no idea she'd been thrown out until I saw security come over to escort her off the court. I would love to know what she said that got her ejected.

As others have said, Chelsea took over the game and was money at the line...shades of Jasmine Thomas. E-Will was a warrior under the basket. Liston got some good looks. Our defense was excellent, and Maryland's was also quite good.

Looking forward to the rematch in College Park!

I enjoyed the game and I'm really impressed with our team. We set the tone with pressure trapping defense forcing turnovers. On offense we have strength inside (Elizabeth Williams) and outside (Chelsea Gray). Liston was excellent slashing to the basket for passes and off the dribble. Jones is quick on defense. The team was a real pleasure to watch.

Brenda was "on" the refs from the opening play, but nothing outside of normative behavior for her. She typically knows exactly how far she can go before the T and by how much she can leave the coaches box (rather, by how much the refs will allow her to flaunt the coache's box and also step onto the court when her team is on defense in front of her [Note--refs, do you read this bulletin board?]). Last night, she went right up to the edge in pushing the ref several times. The explosion prior to the T resulted in one ref going directly to the other 2 refs to talk to them. I read this as, in soccer refereeing parlance, the "steak was marinated". It was. In real time at the game, it looked to me like Gray fouled a defender on a fast break by cutting her off (illegal screen), but on the replay it didn't look as bad. So, with the the steak marinated the next Brenda explosion = "T". Brenda kept going to the point where she was really close to making contact with the official (but didn't). Before she got the second T (a continuation play by her!), the refs conferred with each other and it was clear it was a second "T by consensus". Well-played Brenda. The "coachspeak" after the game of "I was protecting my players" is the pot calling the kettle black. I actually will miss her as she makes the Duke-MD Women's Matches even more entertaining and exciting to me than the Duke-UNC matches. Sylvia I can laugh at, with Brenda it's business. They are our rivals in Women's hoops.

It took Brenda about two minutes into the game to get a get-back-to-the-bench-and-don't-get-in-my-face-again warning. So, she was on thin ice from the get-go. The game was exceptionally physical and the refs let a lot go, including a Thomas foul-that-wasn't-called early in the second half that defies rational comprehension.

Frese thought that Gray moved a screen on a fast break and got away with it. She went bonkers and never calmed down.

But Duke was seizing control by that point. 59-50 when she got T'd up. Probably impacted the final score but not the eventual winner.

Chelsea Gray absolutely took control of that game down the stretch. She was stunning. But equally important was the job Duke did on Tianna Hawkins, holding the ACC's leading scorer to six points, all in the second half. Duke gave up some open 3s to Rutan as a result but it's a trade I would make any day.

Duke also hounded Pavlech into nine turnovers, versus one assist. You're not going to win a lot of games when your point guard is -8 in a/to differential. The injuries to Mosely and Mincy have put the freshman Pavlech into a role she's not quite ready for. She could be real good down the line. But Duke focused on making her night miserable and accomplished that to great effectiveness.

Not many chances left for a Terp to get thrown out of Cameron.

Wonder if she'll get that worked up when they play their new bitter rivals, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Iowa:rolleyes:.
