We are trying to compile a list of all of the past Head Line Monitors for some people in Athletics. We've got everyone back until about 2000, but that's as far as we could get with people that we know.

I was just wondering if there were and old LMs, students, or anyone else on here who would be able to help us out.

Thanks

Try searching the Chronicle archives. You can usually glean a lot about past HLMs. From a brief glance, they go back to at least '98.

I believe Rob Cuthbertson (a cousin of Überfan Doug Hinds) was HLM in '00 or so.

It was Norm Bradley '00-'01 (my freshman year), but I assumed that the OP already had his name.

In 1998 it was Rajeev Chopra and Kevin somebody.

In 1997, I'm not quite sure, but Sheri Sauter (now Morano) seemed to be in charge.

Kiefert. And I'm pretty sure Al Prescott held the post from '98-'99...

Al Prescott

I can confirm Sheri for 1997, Kevin and Rajeev for 1998, and Rob for 2000.

Good call, both.

In 1995 and 1996 I wasn't paying enough attention to authority figures.

1990 was Laura Brownell. She may have been the first formally anointed one. Only remember her name; don't have her contact info or anything else.

This does not compute.

Wait, I'm a mod, nevermind.

Kevin Mullen in '94 (as best as I remember).

If people need contact info you can find most people in the directory at http://www.dukealumni.com/.

Not quite. I was the HLM for 1989.

Thanks for the help everyone. It looks like 1989(?) was the first year that the position was the first year that HLM was an official position, and I've managed to get most all of the names between then and now.

If anyone still has any info between then and '97 it would still be much appreciated.

Just for a little line monitoring history...

Line monitoring came about as a result of an incident in the lineup for the 1986 Duke-Carolina game. That line compacted in a very uncomfortable and somewhat dangerous fashion a couple of hours before the doors opened. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt, but the crush caused several to be overcome.

Recognizing the need to do something, ASDU (the old Duke student government - the Associated Students of Duke University, IIRC) instituted line monitoring the following season - 1986-87. It was run out of ASDU's Building, Grounds, and Athletic Affairs Committee. There was no official title of "Head Line Monitor", but the head of the BGAA Committee ran the program the first two years. For 1987, it was Jose Isasi. For 1988, it was Steve Long. In 1989, the function was separated out from the BGAA and run separately. I ran the line monitoring program that year, but there was no "official" title or anything - it was just a separate function of the old student government.

If you need more details, let me know. Some of this stuff is a little fuzzy - perhaps not surprising given that it was 24 years ago. (Wow, I feel old...)

I can confirm Kevin Mullen was the Head Line Monitor for the 1993-94 season (and possibly for 92-93 season). I was head line Head Line Monitor for the 1995-1996 season.

I'm going to take one more run at this before I let it go...

Anybody know who the HLM was for 1991-1992 and 1992-1993?

We've got everything else, just looking for these last 2 years. Thanks if you can help out!

Not quite. I was the HLM for 1989.

I was the unofficial line monitor from 1986 to 1988 (along with a couple other guys). We were in a group that was always at the front of the line (a guy named Andy Lux would get it started and we hung with him). I would take down the names of the people who came in after us and write them on a piece of paper. When it came time to formally line up on game-day, that piece of paper was the bible. It defined the order in which folks would line up.

It got to be a bit unruly at times though, which may have been why the formal line monitor system was put in place. JB can likely confirm that all this is true... as can a few other posters around here.
