Watched the Terps game against Monmouth. On the bench for Monmouth were three former Heels - Head Coach King Rice and assistants Derrick Phelps and Brian Reese. Their careers at UNC overlapped in the early 90's and I believe that all three were from New York. Rice was a highly touted point guard who started for a couple of years and was noted as a passer and defensive player. He also remains one of DBR favorite players (Just joking!). Phelps was also a point guard who was also noted as a good playmaker and defensive player. Reese was considered a can't miss star but never was the main man on some well balanced teams. I particularly remember that Dean had personnel problems during Phelps and Reese's senior year. Wallace, Stackhouse and McInnis were freshmen on that team and made no secret of their feelings that they should start over the seniors (in addition to Phelps and Reese included Montross and Salvadori).

Watching the Terps point guards throw the ball away at least ten times last night against Monmouth, for heaven's sake, caused me to recall a golden time in ACC basketball in the late 80's and early 90's when point guards Hurley, Anderson, Corchiani, Crotty, Rice/Phelps, Best, Cassell and Sura played.

As much I dislike King Rice, he's very much missed in Nashville. He is an excellent recruiter and coach from everything I heard. Vandy fans were very nervous about his departure and whether we'd be able to continue to land players like John Jenkins.

I seem to remember King Rice playing two outstanding games each year.... both against Duke. He seemed to be average or so when UNC was playing anyone else, but a superstar when he played us.

I could be remembering wrong, wouldn't be the first time..

nice little factoid from this article that all of you would love to read if you haven't already....

Point guard King Rice cried when he learned assistant coach Roy Williams was leaving North Carolina. Williams had recruited Rice to Chapel Hill, and they spent one season together before Kansas hired Williams in 1988.

King Rice, Derrick Phelps and Brian Reese walk into a bar.

No one cares.

(Okay, not the best punch line but it's early)

Derrick and Brian were chasing after King to stop him.

Too far? Lol.

Those three make it very difficult to root for my nephew's alma mater.

My original two rules for selecting winning teams for the NCAA tournament was changed after he and my niece graduated from NEC schools (although Monmouth is moving to the MAAC next year.)

In order:
Duke wins the national championship
UNC loses its first game (they screwed up this rule in 2010, of course)
Monmouth and/or Wagner win their first round game, unless it conflicts with rule number one.

I may have to re-think rule number three if the Hawks make it back.
