View Full Version : Who Plays Coach K?

The "casting" story on the Main Page got me to thinking about the ESPN series, The Bronx is Burning.

I and others I know feel like they did a pretty poor job on casting with the guy that plays Billy Martin. They kind of make him out to be a dweeb. Maybe he was. I don't know - but that's not how I remember him.

Anyway, there is a good chance that one Day ESPN will make a movie about the Duke/UNC rivalry. I base this on nothing. If they did do this now, however, I put the question to you:

Who would play Coach K? Dean Smith?

Any other actors playing other key Duke/UNC characters?

Just something to ponder. Bart Simpson as Bobby Hurley?

How about John Cusack cast as Coach K?

And Andy Griffith (Matlock era) as Deano. Though he may be too tall to be believable.

nothing could be worse than brian denehy (sp?) as bob knight. that movie was horrendous.

Robert Loggia could make a pretty good Dean. Just crotchety enough, looks similar enough to pass.
I'm still stumped on K.

I'm stumped on Coach K as well.

Maybe Will Smith as Grant Hill?

Could Robert DeNiro pull off a Coach K?

Will Smith would be a good Grant Hill....I can't see DeNiro as Coach K...but perhaps a (younger) Pacino

I would LOVE to see that. we already know he can yell, plus hes got that vaguely ethnic thing going.

El Deano would be well played by the Devil. :D

Dean Smith should definitely be played by Rip Torn. Rip Torn looks just like Dean in "The Beastmaster"

I mean, it's really not that bad a stretch. Plus, Imperioli's K definitely wouldn't hesitate to crack some skulls if/when necessary:

Good point. I think it could work though.

UNC Casting:

Dean Smith - LOVE the Rip Torn idea. Is he dead?
Jeff McGinnis - Flava Flav
Eric Montross - Vanilla Ice
Rashad McCants - Jay Z
Rasheed Wallace - Snoop Dogg
Sean May - Any dude from the 80s rap group, The Fat Boyz
Heindrick Rodel - Justin Henin
Tyler Hansbrough - Sinead O' Conner
Dante Calabria - Dante Calabria as himself
Brendan Haywood - Seal
King Rice - Urkel
Dave Popson - Brent Musburger
Pat Sullivan - Any Jo Schmo
Matt Dorothy - Vulture from the Muppets of course

King Rice - Urkel

Urkel, aka Jaleel White, was a BIG Duke fan. He actually came to Coach K's camp a couple of times. So please recast Rice so as not to offend Mr. White.

Can't let this one slide, EarlJam. As the biggest Muppets fan you know, I have to point out that you have uttered sacrilege. He's no vulture, he's an eagle. Sam Eagle, to be exact. Mr Eagle "feels his species and role as national symbol have placed certain responsibilities upon his shoulders[, and h]e has taken it upon himself to promote and protect wholesome American morals and values:

http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Sam_Eagle

Thus, he couldn't possibly play Doh. To be fair, however, the physical resemblance is undeniable.

There's a web site out there that posits a photo from Tyler's Missouri days against a photo of BEAKER, from the Muppets.

Brody's definitely got the schnoz down, but is a bit on the young side. Maybe he plays "K, The West Point Era."

I would like to personally offer my sincerest apologies to Mr. Sam Eagle. EarlJam Motion Pictures regrets the error of refering to him/it as a vulture and, at the request of his agent Wilson, will no longer seek Eagle's services for the part of Doh. We fully respect and recognize the many contributions to entertainment Mr. Eagle has provided over the years and in no way meant to offend. Best of luck to Sam in all of his future endeavors.

Pacino came to mind as well...

For a younger actor, I don't really know. Cusack might work (as mentioned above.)

Can't believe no one's said David Duchovny yet. He's a dead ringer, and has the somewhat nasal voice as well.

That hadn't occurred to me at all. Not sure I'd go so far as to call him a "dead ringer," but it could definitely work. That said, Duchovny would need an awful lot of shoe polish, I mean hair dye to approximate the proper hair color.

On a side note, would he out Deano or Ol' Roy as an alien?

Politics aside, this is the best choice in my book as far as being able to pull it off without it being some kind of "impression."
