"Duke redshirt senior Sean Renfree is one of four finalists chosen for the Pop Warner National College Football Award, an accolade presented by Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. that honors a Pop Warner alumnus who has made a difference on the field, in the classroom and in his community.

Renfree, a three-year starter and two-year team captain, is a Pop Warner alumnus that also received recognition as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete, a member of the AFCA Good Works Team and a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Renfree has led Duke to a 6-4 record this season and bowl eligibility for the first time since 1994.

“I feel very honored to be a finalist for the Pop Warner National College Football Award,” Renfree said. “This award is especially meaningful to me because of the tremendous impact the Pop Warner organization had on the beginning of my football career and sports in general.”

Joining Renfree as finalists are Miami running back Mike James, Connecticut wide receiver Nick Williams and Michigan offensive lineman Patrick Omameh.

In the classroom, Renfree is pursuing a graduate degree in humanities. He owns a 3.81 grade point average in his graduate program and was recently named to the Capital One Academic All-District III Team. He earned his undergraduate degree in public policy and is a four-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and a two-time selection to the All-ACC Academic Football Team.

Renfree is also active in the Durham community, volunteering his time with numerous community service projects, including the Duke Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Read with the Blue Devils, Durham Rescue Mission, the MLK "Million Meals" Event and Active Teens.

The Pop Warner National College Football Award is presented during the annual Pop Warner Super Bowl at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. The inaugural award was presented to former University of Nebraska and current New York Giants’ defensive back Prince Amukamara. In 2011, the award was presented to University of Virginia and current Washington Redskins' cornerback Chase Minnifield.

“To play Pop Warner football, we require our young athletes to perform in the classroom and ask that they represent their community in a positive light,” said Jon Butler, executive director of Pop Warner Little Scholars. “We created the Pop Warner National College Football Award to honor a student-athlete who has continued to demonstrate those values at the next level, and who serves as a positive example for our young athletes both on and off the field. We considered hundreds of tremendous athletes this year, and found an exceptional group of finalists in Sean Renfree, Mike James, Patrick Omameh and Nick Williams.”

The winner of the Pop Warner National College Football Award will be announced on December 5th during the 56th annual Pop Warner Super Bowl. Nominations are accepted from SIDs across the country in the fall, and hundreds of college players are considered."
