Wonderful, wonderful news.

From GoDuke:

Statistics for the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) released Thursday by the NCAA indicated that ninety-eight percent of freshmen student-athletes receiving scholarship aid or recruited individuals participating in programs that do not offer athletic aid graduated from Duke within six years. The GSR is based on student-athletes who entered college as freshmen in 2002-2005 and allows for the removal of those individuals from the cohort who left Duke in good academic standing.

A total of 16 Duke teams achieved a 100 percent GSR: baseball, men's basketball, men's fencing, men's golf, men's swimming and diving, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's fencing, field hockey, women's golf, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis, women's cross country/track and field and volleyball.

Duke's remaining programs - men's cross country/track & field (92), football (92), men's lacrosse (96), men's soccer (93), wrestling (97) and rowing (96) - all achieved a GSR of 92 percent of better.

Duke's 98 percent Graduation Success Rate is tops in the ACC, followed by Boston College (97), Wake Forest (95), Miami (93), North Carolina (88), Virginia Tech (88), Virginia (87), Clemson (84), Maryland (83), Florida State (78), N.C. State (77) and Georgia Tech (76).

In addition, the Federal Graduation Rates were released on Thursday. Duke freshmen scholarship athletes that enrolled in 2002-05 posted a four-year class average of 86 percent. The Federal Graduation Rate does not allow for the removal of those individuals from the cohort who left Duke in good academic standing, and only includes scholarship student-athletes.

Wonderful, wonderful news.

From GoDuke:

This is indeed wonderful.

Shouldn't there be an asterisk by Carolina (88), with a disclaimer that there is no word on how many actually attended class in order to graduate?

In other news from a nationally prominent basketball program, UConn Mens' Basketball graduation rate = 11%

Yikes. This according to Yahoo Graduation rate is more bad news for UConn (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/graduation-rate-more-bad-news-200524953--ncaab.html)

The GSR, released Thursday, measures the percentage of student-athletes earning diplomas at a school over a six-year period. This year's numbers are for the classes that entered school from 2002 to 2005.

UConn's 11 percent rate was far below the national average of 68 percent for men's basketball.

Can someone list the major for each graduate, especially football and men's basketball?

Wonderful, wonderful news.

From GoDuke:

This is indeed wonderful news. However, our basketball graduation rate won't look quite as good when our one-and-dones hit the list in four and five years respectively.

This is tremendous news no matter how you slice it. Compared to other universities or not, the record the young men and women--their coaches, their families, the support staff, etc.--has compiled over the years is something we can all be proud of as fans, alums, students. The education young people get at Duke is taken seriously, and what they do with their educatoin after law school is taken seriously. That sets Duke and its peers apart. Let's celebrate that and them. :)

Beyond the fact that it would be a herculean undertaking to do this for all of our varsity athletes, why?

They're keeping it in double digits at least. Baby steps.
