Maryland...NOT OUR RIVALS!!

And with Duke going from playing two out of five non-Wake Atlantic Division teams in football each year to playing one out of six, it's safe to say that NC State isn't either.

I'm told by a number of GT alum from the '70's that they have a dislike for ND going back to football in that time frame. FWIW.

In football, GT and ND have played a fair amount, esp. in the 1920s and 1970s.

In fairness, that's really the only rivalry matchup that stands out as unusual. The rest all make a lot of sense, including keeping the Tobacco Road rivalries entirely self-contained.

Although I'd rather have divisions with more home-and-homes, there is no good way to that with 15 teams. So, the BB schedule is about as good as it gets.

But, the football schedule is nasty. Duke will be playing NC State, and all the other teams in the other division not named WF only once every six years. If they do two year home-and-home rotations, it will be 10 years between meetings. 3-4 team pods would be much better.

Like I've always (sorta) said, day 3 of the 5-day ACC hoops tourney is one of the coolest sporting events around....

Georgia Tech shows up in both major movies about Notre Dame Football. Not on does the Georgia Tech-Notre Dame game figure in the climax of "Rudy", but the Jackets show up in "Knute Rockne, All-American" where the kid's father begs Rockne to let him play, but the kid isn't good enough to go up against a "big, tough" GeorgiaTech line. But Rockne relents and lets the kid kick off for the Irish.

I was kind of hoping the ACC would give the regular-season champions the tournament's only bye. Have the other 14 teams play seven games over two days, leaving eight teams in the quarters and go from there.

Alas, they didn't ask my advice.

Yep, that's my idea of fun too. If you had two venues to play with, it could even be done as a four day tournament. The first day could have nonstop basketball from noon to midnight.

Two venues was my idea! Anyway, Thursday and Friday have been noon-to-midnight basketball for some time now. :)

The problem with only the regular-season champion getting a bye is we're moving even further away from the double round-robin, so it's even more likely the #1 seed is not the best team in the conference.

I like this format. Gets all the riff-raff out of the way early and allows for a 16th team. Only problem is they'll almost certainly price the Wednesday tickets the same as all the other games, meaning a full book will go from around $375 to $500. (A book of 11 games was $363 for years, then it went up a bit in 2011 or 2012.) The flip side is the secondary market will have even more tickets available, as has happened with every other expansion.

No, I'm thinking noon-to-midnight NCAAT style. Switch to the other game at halftime. Watch the end of the later game after the early game ends. No dinner break.

OK, here's my solution to the 14-team/8-game football problem:

1. Two four team pods, two three team pods
2. Form divisions by rotating through the two possible 4+3 combinations
3. 7th game: Permanent rivalry with one cross pod member (i.e. the pod that will never be matched)
4. 8th game: Rotate through the other 2 or 3 cross pod members.

Teams in 4 team pods would play:
4 teams every year (three intra pod + one cross pod rival)
6 teams every other year (three team pod members)
3 teams every third year (non-rival cross pod members)

Teams in 3 team pods would play:
3 teams every year (two intra pod + one cross pod rival)
10 teams every other year (four team pod members and non-rival cross pod members)

Would NCAA rules allow for a conference playoff? Of course the schools wouldn't go for it under the current bowl system, but as the four-team playoff system takes hold, could the ACC use some of its conference games as a playoff substitute?

What a clear, simple solution! How did they not think of this already?
