Sally Ride (1951-2012)

Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, died today at 61. (http://www.nasa.gov/topics/people/features/ride.html) She had been battling pancreatic cancer.

I didn't know that, in addition to holding a Ph.D. and being an astronaut, she was also an athlete. She played varsity tennis at Stanford.

I rember how all she ever wanted to do was ride around all over town signifying in her hot little 1965 Ford sports car.

She was an amazing and accomplished woman. While she was at Stanford, Billy Jean King tried to convince her to drop out and go pro. I think the world was better off having had her as a scientist, astronaut and inspiration.
