Here's the story (http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/8093482/danny-ferry-become-atlanta-hawks-new-gm-sources-say).

Any chance we can do a DBR Mock Draft 2.0 with Danny Ferry replacing Jason Evans?

Atlanta has an interesting situation. Joe Johnson gets max money but is not a superstar. Al Horford and Josh Smith are athletic and impressive, but neither is a superstar. Marvin Williams is a disappointment. Teague could be a really good point guard for them if he continues to improve.

Even if they sign no one else for next year, the Hawks are already over the cap with the five guys I mentioned above, plus Zaza Pachulia. They have to flip Josh Smith's expiring contract or go the trade route to do anything. They are basically a 1st round playoff team and no better or worse.

Ferry should do a similar deal to what the Bulls are trying to pull off with Deng - flip Josh Smith for a top 10 draft pick or for a true center (Pau Gasol?). Moving Marvin Williams is much tougher though, especially in a world where Deng, Igoudala and Gay might be available. Moving Joe Johnson is practically impossible because he's owed $89 million over the next four years (you'd have to pay him that to amnesty him too) and only scored 18 a game.

Ferry should seek to build around Horford, see what he has in Teague and try to get really good value for Josh Smith (assuming Smith really wants out), then try to give Marvin Williams away. There's not much you can about Joe Johnson. The sins of the father....

The Hawks are a heavily maligned team, but it's worth noting that they still had the 4th best record in the East even though they missed Horford for most of the year. In the playoffs, with a just barely back Horford and no Zaza Pachulia (who had a good year), they lost to Boston on a very bad call - a misapplication of the rule on a reviewed play at a key moment on the road in Game 6 - that the NBA later admitted was wrong and apologized for. Boston then took the eventual NBA Champs to the limit. So while everyone writes off their upside, with Smith coming into his own and a still young and improving Horford and Teague, it's not out of the realm of possibility that they could surprise people if managed correctly.

Last time I saw Danny in Atlanta, it was the old Omni for the '89 ACC championship. IIRC, we played very poorly yet had a chance to push the Heels to overtime with a Danny 50 footer at the buzzer which just missed. If failing memory serves, this was the game where K and Deano got into a cussing match across the scorer's table.

Danny was a great player for us, hope it goes well with the Hawks.
