My point above being....that increase may indicate a suspicious amount of voting in a 20 minute span for the "leader" such to increase the percentage for the leader by .5 in a very small unit of time.

Also, while I am a words and thoughts guy not a math/science/computer person, it strikes me as a bit odd that our man's percentage would stay the same rather than decline slightly during the slew of votes "cast" for the leader during that short midnight 20 minute period.

Perhaps some kind of ballot stuffing was in play. Or perhaps the total for the leader was simply tampered with without attention to realizing such a big change in the leader's percentage would cause our man's percentage to decline.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

Off the top of my head I'm thinking anyone clever enough to tamper would be able to figure out that other percentages would still need to add up to 100--perhaps the shift was accounted for by dips in other candidates rather than CJ.

On the other hand, ballot stuffing of one sort or another might be possible. Theoretically, at least, the fact that it's not possible to vote from the same computer more than once per day, coupled with the fact that it's necessary to type in a code, would seem to make robot voting schemes impossible, but there might be ways computer experts could get around this. When my daughter was in high school, her science-and-tech oriented school won a contest to get an appearance by a pop star because they were able to figure out how to do repeated automatic voting. But I don't think that contest had "type in the letters you see" protections.

Perhaps more likely is the old fashioned form of ballot stuffing--a campus-wide initiative for everyone to vote during the same 30-minute period, while they were thinking about it, or a tweet or mass text message reminding Notre Dame folks to vote. It's also possible that the site doesn't instantly and automatically update the totals, so you happened to check in just before and just after an update.

Jarhead
05-10-2012, 09:54 PM
The current difference has our guy behind by 0.3%. In the past it always seemed that we were the best at ballot stuffing, but this time ND and DU are, as they always qualify, statistically tied. Another consideration is the fact that the this online vote counts for just one third in the overall ranking of these guys. I believe there is one third voting by coaches, and one third by media know nothings. A close online vote may not stand up to the others.

I think you are right about how the decision is made. So the online vote can't win the award. But winning the online vote keeps someone in position to win if they get enough of the other votes.

The good news is, even if C.J. came in second, this is only one third of the voting, with media and coaches doing the other parts. So, assuming the tally is cumulative and not winner-take-all, C.J. is still in a strong position to compete for the award.

Four Final Fours is most definitely something to be proud of, and scoring the winning goal in overtime in the National Championship game is a once in a lifetime memory. We've enjoyed seeing all the great things he does on the lacrosse field, and from what I have read, he has been an excellent contributor in the other sectors of the Senior Class Award--scholarship and service, as well. Though it wasn't a great day for Duke lacrosse generally, CJ (who had a pretty good if not great day, with a goal, 8 ground balls, and a close-to-even 10 of 21 on faceoffs) won the Lowes Senior Class Award.

So we did it (with some help from the other two thirds of the voters--coaches and media)!

Congratulations, CJ. Well deserved!

Weirdly commenting on my own post which I can't edit any more to note that it's only because of the ridiculously high standards CJ has set that I would have called his performance yesterday "pretty good" rather than "very good" or, in fact, "great." He has been a real difference maker, and I will be interested to see how the team and coaches make up for not having him next year.

I see you already heard the news. I came back to say thank you for all your efforts and to let you know he won. We are very proud of CJ. He has had a tremendous four years at Duke. Four Final Four appearances is something to be proud of. Yesterday was not the outcome we wanted though. Thank you again. GO DUKE!!!

While it wasn't the outcome we wanted, it was nice to see CJ win a faceoff, charge toward the net, and score one last time. We'll miss him.

No it doesn't. One of the great, great moments my 50 year Duke sports watching career!
