Curtis Beach broke his own world record in the 1000M run (http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=205395455&DB_OEM_ID=4200) in the final event to win the 2012 NCAA Heptathlon Championship. Big congrats to Curtis. He had been hanging around fifth to seventh for most of the second day before destroying the field by 15 seconds (and the event leaders by 25 seconds) in the last event to pull off the win.

Thanks for posting. Curtis is the real deal. Great representative for Duke even if he didn't have world class athletic stature. Curtis is possibly the greatest student-athlete ever at Duke. It was terrific that his family traveled to Idaho from home in Albuquerque to see his performance.

Just to clarify, that's a world record in the 1000m in the heptathlon, not the overall world record in the 1000m.

Nothing off his performance though. Assuming he goes to olympic trials, it will be cool to see if he is able to come closer to making the team than he did last year.

I had always thought that the Olympic Heptathlon was on the women's side of the competition. Will he be trying for the Decathlon?

Outdoors, yes. Men compete in the decathlon and women in the heptathlon. (though there has been a push for women to compete the full dec)

This was the NCAA indoor championships.

At indoor meets, due to space restrictions (discus and javelin) and the shorter track (and due to tradition), men compete the heptathlon and women the pentathlon.

Curtis would have done well in the international event as well.
From goduke.com
"On the other side of the world, the 2012 IAAF World Championships have also been taking place in Istanbul, Turkey. With their marks, Beach and Wisconsin's Cato would have place second and third in the international event."
