The ACC leading Duke women play next at home against the Gobblers from Blacksburg. Earlier in the season, Duke easily handled VT up at their place. This is the penultimate home game, with the last game against Miami on Friday 2/24 likely to be for the regular season title.

An interesting read on ESPN today, with the new bracketology column. UNC, losers of three straight, is now listed as one of the last four in the tournament. With a current RPI of 90, and a challenging last two weeks, they are in danger of dropping down to the NIT. (I'm sure we're all saddened by this possibility.) Since they host a first/second round site, if they don't make it in, it's pretty clear that Duke would then play there instead. Memories of the 1988 men's tournament, when after sweeping three games from the heels, Duke played there instead of the favored light blue.

The women won a fairly lackluster game 67-45, helped by an 11-0run to end the game. VT, under first year coach Dennis Wolff, played a lot tougher than in the past, however talent was lacking.

Tricia Liston led the team in scoring, overall though, a lot of unforced errors and poor play. Elizabeth Williams was double teamed almost every time she touched the ball, but didn't handle it very well. She was fouled a lot, but didn't convert well enough.

The worst thing for Duke was Richa Jackson going down on a layup attempt after a foul. She grabbed her knee, was down on the floor for a while, and had to be helped to the locker room. She did return after halftime on crutches, and sat behind the bench with an ice bag on her knee. An MRI is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

But Richa Jackson has sustained a possibly serious knee injury. Fingers crossed.

After the game, McCallie seemed like a coach trying to process the long-term loss of a starter. The post-game vibe was pretty somber.

Duke is down to eight recruited players. Margin for error is razor thin.

I'm gonna use some post hoc ergo propter hoc reasoning here. Last time this happened, we won the ACCT and went to the Final Four. 2002.

And if you'll recall, after fighting our way back from a 17-point second-half deficit to tie the game with Oklahoma, we had nothing left. Wynter Whitley made an egregious mental mistake at the defensive end, and the Sooners put us away.
