Each day during the basketball season, Coach K records a 3 Minute audio file with Bob Harris, aptly named "Duke Basketball Report" (DBR) to provide us with a daily report of sorts on the team. Like anything else Coach K does, he gives quality information, and it's interesting to see what he speaks on each day. Good stuff. I thought it would be good to have a running thread on this, to drive discussion on the topics Coach speaks on. I will update the thread each day with the audio file for the day.

Today he spoke on the instructions/rules he gives to the team as they head home for Christmas Break. They are not allowed to play pickup, even with family, and he wants them to run to keep their cardio up, and get shots up on a daily basis. Not just random shots, but rather game simulated shots. Gee, I wonder if Mason will be working on continuing to hone in that lethal lefty jumphook, or perhaps some other specific shot?:) I kid, I kid. Seriously, Mason has played great, but I imagine he will get a few free throw attempts up during the break. Enjoy!

Here is today's file. I also posted the files from Monday and Tuesday as I intended to start this thread on Monday, but life got in the way!

12_26_11 DBR now in the list at the top. Enjoy!

Excellent, thanks. The girl from the bank kind of creeps me out though.

I wonder why K is such a dogmatist when it comes to partaking in friendly pick-up? Weird. (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1719255)

Great information. Thanks for passing along. God I love listening to him talk.

Thanks for the links as it is great to hear updates straight from the top. It sounds like Coach K lays some significant rules on the team for the break, which I do not find surprising.

Sounded like he was afraid one of the other participants was going to try to "prove he could play in the ACC" and someone would get hurt. That was my take, at least.

Still, I find it hard to believe that MP1, MP2 and MP3 aren't gonna find some time to ball in the back yard after the roast beast is gone..

Or the Curry's or the River's... Tough rule to abide by. My High School baseball coach always banned us from playing pickup hoops during the season. I am ashamed to admit a few of us broke that rule on a daily basis. :D

I understand K's stance though. You just can't risk injury, especially right before ACC play starts.

Hey all, below is today's DBR with Coach K. I also added it to the master list in Post 1.

Today Coach spoke on the activities he and the staff partake in during the holiday break. Each will spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with their families at their homes in Durham as all have "little ones" as K referred to them, and "it is important for those little ones to experience Christmas in their own homes rather than traveling to extended families".

The assistants will also travel to the various Holiday Tourney's to recruit. As for the Master himself? He will be reviewing game tape from all 11 of the games played thus far, and deciding on what changes to make when practice resumes. He also will meet one on one with each player when they return, to discuss the good and the bad in the tape, providing them instruction on continuing the good things they are doing, and correcting areas of their individual games that need changing.

Great stuff. I find it insightful. I meant to mention this in the original post and forgot, but since I live local, during normal work weeks, I have the good fortune of listening to these live each day at 8:30AM on 620 The Buzz on the commute into work. Started the thread so the non-locals could get plugged in, and to drive discussion on K's comments.

Enjoy!

The last item that Coach K mentioned was interesting to me. The NCAA, within 6 months, will not have such restrictive policies on contact and communication with players. I think he means recruits? He said the NCAA is "moving from the horse-and-buggy" to a car, I think with respect to contact and communication.

Yep. Good catch. I forgot to mention that. He was talking about changes in recruiting rules. I knew the NCAA was moving to unlimited texts, but it appears unlimited phone calls as well based on the statement from Coach K.

I actually had a buddy who was an RA at Wilson; he's told me that some of his residents played pickup with Nolan once. I'm not sure if it was actually during the season, or if there's some sort of assumption that Duke students won't try to hurt the players. Either way, I gathered that he wasn't exactly exerting himself.

The players routinely (or sometimes, if not routinely) show up in wilson after the season is done and play pickup.

Today was unique and not about basketball. Coach K shared how Christmas was at his house when he was a kid. They had a big family with extended family living on the floor below them. True to his Catholic roots, Christmas Eve's were spent with the family attending Midnight Mass.

Link below, and also added to the master list in post 1. Merry Christmas to all my fellow DBR members!

Santa has come, dropped a few gifts, and is now back resting at the North Pole, so time to go to work! Per the report from coach today, all of the players were to report to Cameron today by 3pm. Light shoot around from 3pm to 4pm, and then a team lift in the weight room at 4pm. They follow that up with a light practice for about an hour or an hour and 15 minutes. Lots of running drills during the practice to work off the ham, turkey, etc that moms and grandmoms filled the guys up with at Christmas.

Back at it again tomorrow. Saturday can't get here fast enough! 2 games in 4 days and 4 games in 9 days should get all of us our fix, that we desperately need after 2 extended breaks this month.

Link below and in the master list.

Thanks Bob. I had Sat/Sun on the brain for some reason. So, Friday/Sunday, not Sat/Sun. All the better! One less day to wait!

Coach K detailed even more changes to recruiting rules on today's show. Apologies to all for not linking the 12/27, 12/28, and 12/29 shows yet. For some reason GoDuke.com has not posted either of those yet. Not sure what's up with that. I did hear the 12/27 show and this mornings show live. I will put the links up as soon as they become available.

On the 12/27 show, Coach laid out the practice schedule for that day. The guys were to have what Coach described as a "physical" practice in the morning session with scrimmages planned. After a meal and a break, they were to come back in late that afternoon for a second practice session. So lots of work going on. If I recall correctly, the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday practices were to be about working on their stuff, and in today's practices the focus would be on the Western Michigan scouting report and game plan.
