This month's Duke Magazine has a fine article on the 1942 Rose Bowl.

My grandmother (bless her heart) replanted roses Duke brought from Pasadena. They were growing in her yard until at least 2000. Don't know what's become of them since, though. I hope they're still there - they don't need much.

She also rather delighted in squishing (with gloved hands, of course) japanese beetles whenever the opportunity arose. Which was often, alas.

This month's Go Duke magazine also has an article about the Rose Bowl played at Duke in 1942. This article is by Barry Jacobs. The references to the ties between the new gym (now Cameron Indoor Stadium) and Duke's first Rose appearance may be of interest to some readers.

The article in Go Duke magazine also devotes some attention to the way Wallace Wade was treated by the press in California. It reminded me a bit of the sort of thing often discussed on this board and elsewhere about Duke haters and those who hate a Duke coach.

Both articles are grand reminders of the rich history of Duke University.
