This was brought up in the Duke-Wake Forest thread, but deserves its own thread. Eron Riley, Duke class of 2009, was just signed by the New York Jets this week off of the Broncos' practice squad. For those who don't remember Eron (Shame on you), he was an amazing WR for Duke and terrific deep threat, who is all over Duke's leaderboards:

2 Time All-ACC,
7th in Receptions
2nd in Yards
3rd in TDs,
School record with Thaddeus Lewis for most TD passes between a QB and WR.
Single Game record with 4 TDs in a game against Navy.

Since Eron was signed off of the Practice Squad of another team, he is required by rule to be on the Jets' active roster for the next three weeks. He's replacing essentially Derrick Mason.

Big Congrats to Eron and I hope (as a Duke Fan AND a Jets Fan) that he shows the Jets that he's worth a spot for good.

First, congrats to Riley!

However, I'd word the second sentence a little differently. He's effectively filling the roster spot left by Mason, but not replacing his role. Jeremy Kerley has replaced Mason's role. Riley will likely become the 4th/5th WR.

But still - great for Riley to have made it to an active roster. Hopefully he can stick.

Anybody know of other Duke players in the NFL? Thad Lewis and maybe the long snapper? (not including two stud tight ends that left after freshman year).

Anybody know of other Duke players in the NFL? Thad Lewis and maybe the long snapper? (not including two stud tight ends that left after freshman year).

Here's the list from ESPN --

Duke
PLAYER TEAM POSITION
Patrick Bailey Tennessee Titans Linebacker
Thaddeus Lewis Cleveland Browns Quarterback
Patr'k Mannelly Chicago Bears Long Snapper
Vincent Rey Cincinnati Bengals Linebacker
Eron Riley New York Jets Wide Receiver

All these are now on the active roster. The five players in the NFL compare favorably with the number of Duke players drafted by the NFL in the past ten years -- ONE, UNO, UN, ODIN, EINE.

Thanks! I wondered if Mannelly was still in the NFL.

I didn't know Vinny Rey made a team this year! Great for him.

In fact, some time last year he got the distinction of having played in more games as a Chicago Bear than any other player in team history. By all accounts, a really good player and a really good guy (he's friends with my vet!).

Maybe the most athletic receiver I can ever remember from Duke. Dude is fast as hell and has serious ups. Had a number of late-game chokes, but a great talent for sure.

Eron was inactive for yesterday's game sadly, but predictably, since he'd been on the team for less than half a week and didn't know the playbook. The Jets have a bye next week, so the real question is whether he'll be active in 2 weeks.

Eron Riley had a very nice game vs. the Eagles on Thursday night. He had 4 receptions and showed very sticky hands, making some very difficult catches that required full extension or reach to get. The announcers singled him out as being someone they'd like to see 'stick' with the team. Other receivers used on this last day to 'show the staff' missed many easier chances. Eron even put on extra yards after a great catch, making a move on a defender, for extra yardage.

I don't know if he will be a casualty of cut down day, but Eron has shown that he can catch the ball, which is what the Jets have been lacking. The Jets have few receiver options; the would be wise to give Eron a chance.

Hopefully he will find a team to catch on with.
