I have JUST spoken with Chris Kautza, and contrary to rumors floating around, tailgating in Blue Devil Alley on Saturday will all go on as usual. There will be NO ropes preventing use of our hillside. They have thrown some grass seed on it, which of course is a waste of time and money, but that is their loss and not our concern.

This public service announcement brought to you by the award winning True Blue 'Cue Crew tent #7, fka Brunchgate 2093

Very good news since our grills will be filled tacos and burritos Saturday to feed tons of people. The thought that all of the tents would be confined to the parking lot was a bit unnerving. Whomever decided that football season was the time to plant grass (and previously turn that hill into a mudpit by tearing up the old grass) needs to seriously revisit their thinking. Ah well, the party goes on in rain or shine, mud or clumped clay.

I will be there with a hungry appetite!!

In fairness to the grounds team, they are likely planting fescue, and you have to plant that between late September and mid to late October making sure the seed has time to germinate before the first frost hits. This is actually the optimal time for planting fescue grass. We will help them packed it down real good though! :)

Ozzie, with respect to the 3d Place Fork Trophy for the Eastern Carolina BBQ Throw Down ... did places #1 and #2 also get over-grown, mis-shapen glass squashes? What is that supposed to be? A flame?

The categories (Brisket, Chicken, Ribs and Pork) were awarded up to 10th place (out of 44 teams from 9 states). The top 3 in each category got hand blown glass trophies. (We got 3rd place for pork.) Here is a look at the artist and the awards.

That's impressive: placing in a bbq contest in NC. Like being selected by Cut to be a QB, or by K to play hoops.

Still curious about the trophy (and I'm probably too literal-minded). Is it just "is" or is it supposed to represent
something.

Perhaps, and I'm just guessing, it represents the flame coming off the wood or charcoal in the BBQ pit.

Looks like a yellow squash to me but your explanation makes more sense.

Hope to see a good crowd out in Blue Devil Alley and Wallace Wade today! Should be a perfect day for football.

Here are a couple previews. Duke has a great opportunity in front of them to pull off an upset, but they'll have to play good fundamental football. Guys will have to continue to step up on defense, especially in the secondary.

I agree with you the secondary is going to have to step up against the pass happy Florida State offense, but of equal importance will be the play of the defensive line and their ability to pressure QB E.J. Manuel. We cannot allow Manuel to stand in the pocket with time to pass the ball. I'm sure the defense will bring the blitz at times so when we blitz we absolutely must get there on time or the secondary will be hung out to dry.

I wonder if things start to ge tout of hand like 2 weeks ago, do we start to drop into the nickel again.

I don't understand your question. Our base defense is the 4-2-5 so we are almost always in the nickel.

Perhaps dime is what i meant.

but in other news, shouldn't it really be a penny+nickel defense? dime should be reserved for 10 d backs....and quarter for 25 backs

To bring this back to topic, after we had set up our tents and grills at 7am, someone asked us if we had permission to take the ropes down and didn't we notice the "please stay on the sidewalk signs"? My response was that we did indeed ask and get permission, and that as a general observation it was incredibly shortsighted to plant at the beginning of a three game homestand. Her answer was "nature does not rely on a football schedule". I held my tongue. I'd like to note that during the Tulane game, one of our members fell back on the inclined slope she was standing on during the Devil's Walk and hit her head, which unfortunately garnered her a visit to the ER under medical escort. Later that day I saw another person fall down that same slope. IF they choose to rope off the other side, then that means everyone must stand on the incline, and the risk of injury goes way the hell up, as does risks of lawsuits. I'm sure Duke nor their grounds crews want neither.

No, because in the 4-1-6 you have two nickel backs, and two nickels = one dime.

No, because in the 4-1-6 you have two nickel backs, and two nickels = one dime.

you see, nickel is called nickel because there are 5 backs....5c=nickel....and by your logic, there should be 5 nickelbacks in a quarter formation...and 10 in a half dollar.....

the real answer is that the nickel is the only one that REALLY makes sense....and the others were simply chosen in increasing monetary denomination....any meaning one can ascribe to these names can likely be akin to a "backronym"
