If you read her resume, it is everything you would want to see in a young assistant. Joy will be a terrific role model and coaching/recruiting fit for Duke, especially understanding her personal/academic background and given the type of student-athlete that we want to target. She will speak with more conviction to future recruits, having already walked the walk here. That is really huge, IMO. Joy has experienced and learned from Gail's recruitment and relationship and had three years under Coach P's system and guidance....Nice hire.

You mean that one of G's recruits that was forced to play under P actually wants to come back and work for her? Wow!
Seriously, though...I love this. Joy will always be one of my favorite Dukies, and I am very happy to see her back on the bench. I didn't know that she was interested in coaching, so that's a pleasant surprise. And the hiring of former players model seems to have worked very well for K, now Coach P has placed two on the bench this off-season. Just a couple months away from the first game, I'm getting excited!

This is a great hire for Duke Womens Basketball! I always enjoyed watching Joy play Basketball, and talking with her Mother during and after the games. I hope to see Mr and Mrs Cheek at some of the games this season.

I seem to be the only one concerned that we are replacing a seasoned, highly successful recruiter with a recent graduate. It will be interesting to see how our 2012 recruiting class shapes up.

Yes, but.....

When it comes to coaching, sometimes the best hire available is the one with less experience but great potential and a proven ability/willingness to learn. The very best experienced assistants out there may not be so interested in a lateral move, even to a prestigious program [not sure what that implies about Ms. Stafford-Odom; read it as you will]. If the option is experience without as much promise, I'd rather bet on the newcomer and be patient for a year or two--especially since last year's and this year's excellent incoming classes should give us some recruiting breathing room for a couple of years.

Plus, Coach Cheek will have recent experience of being recruited and playing at Duke to draw on when on the recruiting trail. That perspective should be very helpful.

Let's Go Duke! and a very big 9F to go with it.

Completely agree. We shall see, but I believe Joy will connect extremely well with potential recruits AND their parents. She has a pretty impressive academic/athletic resume that should resonate with future recruits and parents....in addition to a great personality and strong personal character.

The number (and caliber) of assistant coaching losses in the past few months is concerning.

Bringing in Joy Cheek allays those concerns to the extent that the Blue Devils are bringing in someone who knows the game very well.
