Love the new board. I have been chugwaterman and DeerfieldDevil in past lives but had to change when the board changed. Glad to see some old posters and look forward to their comment and contribution. :) ;)

Geez, that Duhon pic has me trying to remember the last time Duke wore their traditional blue uniforms. Have they worn them since that season? It seems like ages...

throatybeard
02-26-2007, 10:43 PM
I think 2004 was indeed the last season. We went with the trim starting in 2005.

We wore the blues against St. John's on Sunday. They're the new road blues with the black panels on the sides, but that's the current edition.

I'll be retired before I figure out all the options but this appears to be a great system. Now if only the Devils and Terps can go deep in the NCAA tourney.

Thanks to Julio, Boswell and their helpers!

Well, I was referring specifically to the old white-panel blues. I don't acknowledge the new blues -- I think they are heinous, and I'd rather wear black than the new blues.

Alteran, why the preference for no avatars, may I ask?

I know nobody wants to look at huge visual mess next to the post, or in the sig either. A few of the Socut boards (Auburn, Bama, and West Virginia in particular) have cultures of having huge images in the sig.

But, I've seen different version of this BBS. Some do have the problem that avatars aren't automatically forced to scale down to like 150x150 pixels. But the Over the Rhine board uses this system and limits avatar size. (And if you have any sense, you pick something that's roughly square, and moderately sized in the first place). I don't know if that's possible with this version of the system.

Oooh, oooh, maybe a poll.

To me, it's not just the size of the avatars, but the content. I think it's better to just leave it clean and classy than risk people putting up sophomoric stuff.

Just trying it out. I appreciate the editing box. I would always forget how to add a link on the old system.

By the way, instead of a drop down list of smiley icons there should be a drop down list of Throatybeard's DBR reference list.

I'm sure someone could whip up a firefox extension that involved simply right clicking in the text field and getting a nice little menu that pops up...

I could be wrong, but I believe there is the option to turn them off in your settings.

throatybeard
02-27-2007, 09:25 AM
1) Yes, you can turn emoticons off.

2) I'm OK with the DBR HPR being placed in a pop-up, But if someone wants to figure out how to do that, I'd like another shot at proofreading it first.

3) Feldspar says

Mods could ask/encourage/cajole/force people to change obscene avatars. I've been to the Wake Forest board, so I know what you're talking about...

Me too!

Luckily, Jason will be hampered by the fact that apparently you're not allowed to post twice within 30 seconds. So, at the most, you're only gonna need to get up to about 172,800 posts per day to keep up with JE.

Test post.

The server(s) seem to be zooming on this board. Great job, guys. I like the "quick reply" box but is there anyway to get it to "activate" automatically instead of having to click on something first?

Thanks! We do currently require a click, the rational being what our administration control screen states:

"When Quick Reply is enabled, you may specify whether or not users must click the Quick Reply icon in order to start typing in the Quick Reply editor.

"If you choose not to require a click, the system will not know to which post a user is replying, making both the threaded and hybrid display modes non-sensical.

"We strongly recommend that you set the option to require a click if you use Quick Reply and have Threaded Mode available on your forums."

I agree with all the other comments, and related to the discussion of avatars--I've seen some others where the pictures were....let me say, a bit inappropriate? I'm hoping we keep the class of the boards. New format is great; still waiting to see on the open trust piece. I'm hopeful, but easing into some things (including avatars) might be nice.

I just wanted to say you picked the best forum out there. vBulletin is by far the best available. I've closely watched the DBR for a few years now. Good to see such amazing improvements.

It looks great.

I'm looking forward to having another board to discuss Duke basketball. Thanks to all those who set this up.

It looks like there are quite a few others who have come over from TDD. It will be nice to have two boards to discuss the team and other topics.

Both you and throaty nailed it. Really, there's so many reasons. My primary ones would be the distraction they cause (particularly when animated), but also the sometimes questionable content.

But hey, this is America. Let's have a vote and then let the real bosses do whatever they want. ;-)
