Brigid Smith and Taylor Trimble were members of the US team that beat Australia in the final yesterday, 14-11. Smith scored an important goal when the US was down; Trimble was the team captain.

Hopefully a bright future for Duke women's lacrosse!

It gets better. Two other incoming frosh played in the Under Armour All-America game in July. And the first piece of the 2012 recruiting class is in place, midfielder Kelci Smesko from two-time NJ state champs Ridgewood having verballed in March. All she did as a junior was score over 120 points on a team with 13 seniors going on to play college lax, and break former Duke All-American Leigh Jester's school goal-scoring record.

One of these years, the breakthrough will come.

Sounds very promising! Thanks for the update.

FWIW, in its big fall recruiting issue IL ranks Trimble and Smith 1 and 5 among incoming freshman, with Duke's Chelsea Landon at number 14 and two others (Kerrin Maurer and Erin Tenneson) on the watch list.

Duke also has verbals from the number 4 and 9 ranked rising seniors, and two others on the 2012 watch list.

The next few years could be fun.

Duke WLAX recruits have won 6 Heather Leigh Albert awards since 2000, that's like the HS Heisman or McDonalds POY for womens lax. Seems that Duke WLAX has recruited the best talent in the nation for several years. Problem with Kimel is what happens once they get to Duke, sure there have been final fours, but no titles unlike several for UMD, UVA, Northwestern, etc. UNC WLAX seems to do better as well, they just recruited a beast Carly Reed that scored 160 points for a powerhouse program as a HS sophomore! Has there ever been a final game appearance for Duke WLAX? A lot of people remember Duke losing the 10 point lead to UVA in the last 17 minutes or so in the WLAX final four. Danowski may be the opposite for MLAX, Duke seems to recruit 4th of 4 in ACC behind UNC, UVA, UMD, with the best results, 5 straight final fours and a nat title. I think Duke MLAX's recruiting class is 7th behind UNC, UMD, UVA, Harvard, Hopkins, Cuse, and Duke's top recruit Myles Jones is going to prep school for a year. Kimel and Danowski should talk to each other about recruiting and coaching!

If you find five Final Fours in seven years to be disappointing, I'm inclined to think that the problem is not with the program--it's with you expectations.

Since the mid-1990s, Maryland and Northwestern have won 13 out of 16 championships. That's a duopoly on the order of Barca and Real.

Now, and for the foreseeable future, I think women's college lax is like the English Premier League. At the beginning of every season, there are five (and only five) teams that can say "we have a realistic chance to play for the national championship." Everybody else is playing to make it to the quarterfinals and not get embarrassed.

The five are Maryland, Northwestern, Duke, Carolina, and Florida.

Maryland and Northwestern = ManU and Chelsea.

Florida = Man City, the arrivistes.

Duke and Carolina = Arsenal and Spurs.

(Virginia = Liverpool: lots of past glory, but still a lot of work to do to get back to the top level).

That is frankly not a bad place to be.
