about 90% of duke students have a GPA over 3, and athletes have all this tutoring and study halls, plus many of them take super-easy classes. (there are some smart athletes i know, but the vast majority of the athletes i encountered were in easy classes). given the award criteria this only says so much

It says that Duke is the top school in the ACC for student-athletes. All the schools are judged against the same criteria. 80%+ of Georgia Tech's football team has the same major - and I'd imagine many athletes there also have that same major - yet they have about 1/3 of the athletes recognized that Duke has. I'd say it's definitely something to be proud of!
