Wow. Maybe my memory is faulty, but it always seemed like he was an injury away from absolutely dominating the league. By all accounts he was a likable guy and I always wanted to see him do well. This leaves Mike Dunleavy as the highest drafted player still playing from the 2002 draft.

"was a likeable guy?" He's retiring not dead. :)
FWIW, Mike Krzzyzewski has spoken quite highly--not, that's not a pun--of Yao Ming on a number of occasions.
For those who follow ShaneBattier on twitter... Shane had some high praise for Yao. Such as... "one of the greatest teammates you could as for"... "one of the most solid people you coule ever meet"... (sorry, I don't know now to link tweets)

Apparently Yao's agent says maybe he's not quite retiring yet.

From all that I've read of Yao, I honestly believe he's not only a great teammate and person but a hilarious guy as well.

Have a great - and pain-free! - retirement, Yao Ming.
