Looks like a great situation for Jon: Maccabi are Israeli champs and lost in 2010-11 Euroleague final.

The draw for the 2011-12 Euroleague is July 7. How cool would it be for Maccabi and CSKA Moscow to be drawn into the same group? Scheyer vs. Trajan? Yeah, I would cash in frequent flyer miles to see that.

Thanks for the great news and link. Hopefully, Jon can achieve the same level of success in the Euroleague as Trajan.

Trajan set the bar pretty high for Americans in European basketball. If Jon can match his accomplishments, he will have a heck of a career.

Maccabi Tel Aviv is truly a powerful team in Euro league terms. Wow, a great situation for Jon. He will really have to earn his playing time, but I'm positive of what I've seen of the Euro game that Jon's skill set will fit in nicely.

Fantastic news, so happy for Jon, a great Duke champion.

could we assume that jon's eye injury is completely well?

I was under the impression that eyesight was 30% in that eye and it wouldn't get any better, and that he had just learned to cope with it.

Yeah...

Scheyer lost vision in the top half of his right eye that he won't recover.

"I've completely adjusted to it," Scheyer said. "My vision isn't what it was. (But) it doesn't affect me." ... Scheyer said he has learned to play with the altered vision. He said he can't allow it to become a detriment. "I'm just going to try to be ready," he said.

Definitely has worked hard through adversity. I'll be cheering for him! It's a great opportunity to play for a very solid club.

What a tough break. Total freak accident, nothing anyone really could have done, so glad he's been able to adjust and continue his basketball career. Never got the chance to meet him while at Duke but he seemed like a great guy. Plus I always had affinity for his class as I entered college (not Duke) that year as well (though I finished with Nolan, Kyle, and Casey).

I'm still waiting to see if Brian or Lance can make something happen. I think both are good enough to play, but much like Jon I think they need to land in a situation that fits them perfectly to show their value, otherwise a team may not hang on to them.

This looks like a solid opportunity for a great guy. We had the pleasure of meeting Jon and his family at the WaDuke his junior year. When we told him we drove from Louisville to see them play, he seemed humble and deeply appreciative.

Didn't realize that Scheyer's eye injury was that bad. Before that happened, he was a possible future NBA player. Now, it doesn't look likely; something like that can decisively tip the scales against him to the point where he won't quite make it. Hope things go better in Europe. Good luck Jon!

Congrats to Scheyer. Maccabi Tel Aviv is a fine program with some passionate fans, as I learned during my time in Israel.

For those interested, here is a link to a video of Scheyer's introductory press conference from Israeli newspaper Yediot Akharonot: http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-4090289,00.html.
The website is entirely in Hebrew (none of the major Israeli papers have sports sections in their English editions). However, the press conference is entirely in English so there shouldn't be any barriers to enjoying Jon's big moment.

Good luck, Jon, embarking on this next stage of your basketball career!

Obviously, I'm hoping Jon has a long, great career playing professional basketball. But I'm going to now officially start the "Hey, wouldn't Jon make a great coach? Maybe HE'LL be the guy to follow K" despite Jon being young and hopefully still playing pro hoops when K retires.

Joking aside, I'm sure that, one day, Jon will make a phenomenal coach if he chooses to pursue that. Plus, the idea of the Maryland fans grinding their collective teeth to dust as Jon leads Duke to a couple more decades of utter dominance while displaying nonstop Scheyerface (in a suit) is too delicious to pass up!

I'm kind of bummed he just arrived there, as I was in Israel for almost 3 weeks up until this past Friday. I even considered getting a Maccabi Tel Aviv shirt while I was there, but having no clue if he'll just be there 1 season or many, I didn't end up getting one. But would have been cool to see his arrival. Oh well, hope it goes well for him.

I didn't realize the injury was that bad and permanent ... but it just shows you the determination and character of Jon Scheyer that he's pressing ahead with his basketball career regardless. I wish him the best, and a long, successful career wherever he plays.

And when his playing days are done, he'd probably make an excellent coach or commentator. I know more than a few folks here have long been ready for a certain one-eyed commentator to pass the baton.
