I had put track stuff in the Director's Cup thread earlier, but this deserves a new one. Juliet Bottorff becomes the first Duke athlete to win an outdoor national title. She ran a very tactical race, hanging at the back of the lead group until about 3 or 4 laps left when she moved up to third or fourth. On the front straight right before the bell, the group started to break up and she made a move to take the lead, which no one came close to matching as she ran away with it at the end. Congrats!!!!

Edit: Here's the link to the results page (http://www.ncaa.com/content/di-outdoor-track-field-live-results), I assume Go Duke will have something soon. Carly Seymour was also in the race, but unable to finish. I haven't yet heard why, and it wasn't shown on the stream.

Good stuff, and thanks for posting, Matt.

Here is the goduke.com story on Day 1 results (http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=22490&SPID=1835&ATCLID=205158434&DB_OEM_ID=4200)

Curtis Beach did really well in the first 5 events of the decathlon, and sits in 2nd place overall. To give you an idea of his talent, Beach ran a 46.9 400m as the last event of the day, which was not only the best time in the competition, but an overall Duke school record!

Terrific job by Juliet and glad to see the Duke track and field program coming along well.

Good idea to post this in its own thread. The race was as well executed and thrilling as you describe. I was surprised, really, that no one was able to respond when Bottorff took off--she really had a lot more left than anyone else.

The stream coverage was a little frustrating, because the pictures and the commentary (which was apparently the in-stadium commentary) didn't always match up. In addition to not hearing why Seymour didn't finish, we saw another competitor sprawled on the infield midway through the race with no explanation and the extremely dramatic footage of one of the competitors literally crawling over the finish line on all fours--again with no explanation. But if there is no commercial TV coverage, I guess it is better to get the live stream than to get nothing.

Nice that Julian could get this up on the front page, even if belatedly. It is a terrific accomplishment by a young athlete. Congrats to Juliet.

Too bad the WRAL headline couldn't spell her last name correctly. All the other media stories managed to do so. At least WRAL's story text got it right, even if the headline writer could not.
