Stupid me.

Well played sirs!
Had me 100%. I was somewhat angry, but also thought, hey cool...that means the Michigan game I was at in Charlotte was 904.

I totally forgot what today's date was.

Once again. Well played !

D#@%!

I was dreading going to work and having to listen to all the pale shades of blue chirp as to how the NCAA gave K the record.

Very nice job, DBR . . . .

I, too, bit the hook . . . and like a hungry shark. Fortunately, after vehemently discussing the "unfortunate timing of the NCAA's decision" with Bev, I had a cup of coffee, read this thread, felt stupid, and did not post my diatribe.

Well, according to TarHeel fans, Coach K should have 4 more wins on his tab (and 15 losses), which means they think he already has the record.

As I have the luxury of being many time zones ahead and figuring out it's April Fools by early AM EST, I was considering earlier today putting up a post...

"Austin Rivers declares for the NBA Draft"

Then I decided, that was too cruel, even for April Fools. I'm glad DBR has continued it's fine tradition in a more harmless and well thought out way.

DBR, Duke basketball is a serious matter. If you want something to laugh about take a left out of campus and drive down 15-501 about 8 miles.

Sheesh. I was about to be in a REALLY bad mood all day.

That's 3 years in a row now.

I fell for that too.....I tend to assume people are telling me the truth.

It is worth recalling the greatest sports April Fool's joke (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/cover/news/2000/07/24/finch_flash/) ever!

Re-read it, if you have not read it in a while, as it is a wonderfully written piece.

I plan to show that article to my son's this afternoon. I vaguely recall telling them about it in the past, so they may not fall for it.

But Julio's greatest one (in the mind of this Carolina fan) was the year Doherty had been fired and they posted an article indicating that Carolina had hired Michael Jordan to be the new coach. Funny thing, the whole DBR site was Carolina blue and when you clicked on the link to the news story, the whole screen receded to a little text blurb in middle of screen that said "April Fools".

It was awesome.

I guess I haven't been here long enough (2 or 3 previous April 1s?) and I don't tend to often think about April Fool's day. Makes me a good candidate to be fooled and I was. Nicely done.

One of my favorites ever was our first sports network here in Canada several years ago ran a piece about this great shortstop that was turning heads for the Blue Jays, showing some of his great stats, five tool player, I was all ready to pick Loof Lirpa in my baseball pool that year.

That's my favorite of all time, not because it got me, but because it didn't get me. I was at Duke and a whole benchload of guys were going crazy about the story on Main West. One of them showed me the article. I read a couple of paragraphs and said, "Hey, what's the date on this issue?" I got an incredible amount of cred for being the 'girl' who figured out it was a joke.

I will say I was drawn in a little, thinking, "that's interesting", and thinking, gee, K won't get a big end of game celebration at Cameron when I started reading this thread.

Then I had the thought that if it was actually true, after all the years of the complaints about K not claiming the losses, IC would blow up that he campaigned to get the wins credited so he would have the record!

There was the one a few years back about moving basketball parking downtown to American Tobacco and shuttling everyone into the games. The problem with that "joke" is that it is totally believable that Duke would go there, so I honestly wasn't convinced it was a joke.

I have learned to look for the phone headline each year now.

The DBR April Fool's spoof that stands out in my memory was one of the first ones (it might even have been the very first one). The story claimed that the EPA had determined that Krzyzewskiville was causing unacceptable levels of soil and groundwater contamination, and had ordered Duke to shut it down. The story even had a link to a very official-looking "cease and desist" letter on EPA letterhead. In a particularly nice touch, the fake EPA letter referenced an internal EPA "file number" for the "case" against Krzyzewskiville. I can't remember the full number, but the format was something like XXXX-XXXX-XXXX, and the last four digits were "0401," a sly little nod to the date, April 1.

The thing that I remember most about it is that just about everybody fell for it. There were several angry threads on the DBR Bulletin Board about what an "outrage" this was, how it was a textbook example of government regulation gone haywire, how Duke should take the EPA to court, etc. etc. This went on for most of the day until finally someone caught on and pointed out that it was likely an April Fool's joke.

My mom, who reads DBR religiously but never ventures over to the boards, called me a few hours ago and told me about the article. She was completely enraged. When I got home, I turned on ESPN and never saw it on the crawl. That's when I remembered today's date. I've since called to tell my mom it was an April Fools Day joke. She wasn't home and I ended up leaving a message which, I am sure, she will think is an April Fools joke from me and the cycle will begin again.

My role was confined to this: we were discussing the fact that UNC fans wanted K to take the losses from 1995 and how ironic it would be now if that had happened and I said, say....that would make a good A.F. Thanks! It's always a pleasure to come out of retirement once a year to do the April Fools' Day joke. One of the others in the past that made quite an impact was when we announced that Bill Guthridge was retiring and Dean Smith was coming back as interim head coach. We mocked up a page that made it look like it was coming from the Herald-Sun (which, at the time, actually didn't have a website). Bill Guthridge read it and thought it was hilarious, the Herald-Sun was none to pleased and wrote an article about it (we sent them a gift basket with snacks and wine from North Carolina to make up and all was good), and it actually was broadcast on radio stations in the Midwest as a legitimate news story.

Miss you guys!

My only defense: I'm in Australia, so it was the 2nd when I first read it. Still, props to DBR. Well played!
