Here are a few pictures from recent pick up games held at Cameron Indoor Stadium. [/URL] It was good to see the guys again, including the freshman.

There seems to be a sizable audience. Are the games open to anyone or just campers and their families.

Yep, I reiterate the thanks for watzone. It's especially good to see Paulus out there with some of the injury concerns he has had to deal with...

When is the best time to catch a pick-up game? My 7yr old son would love to see the guys play.

Sorry, but the last chance was this past Monday for the summer.

Mark, are you speaking just in terms of public's abiility to view the practice/pick up game.

I am assuming the players would continue to conduct their own scrimmages sans coaches throughout the second summer semester.

Thanks Wat!

Did anyone notice Marty out there?

Echo the Paulus comment, as well. Good to see he has recovered enough to play pick up.

I think we ought to be more excited about Taylor King than we (generally as a fanbase) are. The kid has one of the quickest releases I've seen, and has range well past the NBA 3-line. He has a pretty good nose for the ball to combine with his good size for a guy of his shooting ability. I think he'll be a solid rebounder and a deadly 3-point specialist. He also showed a great ability to square up while curling off a pick and hit a mid-range shot. When he put the ball on the floor, though, he wasn't very impressive.

I don't know about the rest of us but I am excited about Taylor King, I have always liked his game. It's just right now we have a handful of very skilled wing players, I don't know where his minutes will come from.

That being said there is always room for a shooter in the lineup. He will definitely have to prove himself to K.

Is the big white kid with crew cut Singler?

Yes, I at first didn't realize who it was. In H.S. he had long shaggy hair.

I'm excited about his offense, obviously. He's VERY slow though, and can't play D on the wing. He can bang a little, but not with someone like a Hansblahblah. I'm not sure whether this is going to cost him minutes b/c he cant play D the way K wants, or whether he will still play b/c we need some size. My instinct says it will cost him...I think he will develop into a very good player down the road, though.

I'm excited about TK. As is the case with all freshmen, the fans are going to have to exercise some patience (which is hard for me) and let the guy adapt his game to the college level. I'm optimistic TK will learn to play defense and develop the ability to put the ball on the floor. As a 6"7" deadly 3-point shooter, his upside is huge.

Correct. No more open to the public. They will play in three faclities over the Summer and early Fall. They cut back a lot this season and may not open the games as much in the future. I use to cover them all July and August - not anymore, they are closed. So, much for tradition;) Actually, I understand with the Internet. I covered the pick ups for years and watched them since the eighties.

Yea im excited about Taylor King to, I think he is going to go well in the offense but he does need to work on handles and still needs more of an effort on the defensive end..But he can shoot and rebound very well..

At this point, I'm not worried about TK's defense as he will learn to play Duke defense in practice. I expect there will be some intense practice sessions this year with eleven quality scholarship players on the roster.

I read an article last year, about an AAU game, where Kevin Love was in serious foul trouble so his teammate, none other than Taylor King, dropped into the post and played excellent interior defense down the stretch.

IMO, TK will give maximum effort at both ends of the court!

I recall that article, Bob. That's why I think Taylor King's best opportunity may be in cameo appearances as a shorter Duke version of Pittsnoggle who was 6' 11" tall when Zoubek/Lance are unavailable due to minor injury or foul trouble.

Mmmm, that's weird. They still play in Wilson and in Cameron...or at least they have all this past week. I guess summer session II started a week ago, so they might stop playing for the public soon. I can ask one of my friends if they are. He is the RA for Taylor King, Kyle Singler, and Nolan Smith this summer, and he was the RA for Henderson's class, so he'd prob know their schedule.

Oh ya, someone asked if Marty was still around. I haven't seen him for a while. He was shooting around in Wilson during first session, but he's been MIA for the past few weeks.

I recall you suggesting that several weeks if not months ago, and I wasnt sold on it then. But the more I hear about his interior defense, the more sold I am. I didn't realize how long his arms were, and it seems he has that same instinct/nose for the ball that McClure has. I am worried ,though, that K will play him at the more perimeter oriented 3-spot where he will get smoked on the outside. I hope he loses a little weight and gets a little quicker...

Let me preface this by saying that I have only seen King play during All-star games but I was not impressed with his defense. His reaction time was as poor as I have seen, he was consistently a second behind passes, rebounds. He was easily taken off the bounce. His athletiscm was a full step behind the other players. I think he brings alot to the table with his offense and his effort seemed to be there but all this talk of him being a potential frontcourt force on defense and rebounding seems a little off to me. I think king is looking at being the 10th or 11th player in terms of MPG. All of these reports of his shooting are nice but I think he will have a pretty big adjustment to the speed and athletiscm of the ACC, which is normal considering he is a freshman.

I dont think anyone is suggesting he will be a force, but that considering out lack of bodies down low, his defense and rebounding are adequate enough for him to get PT down there, especially considering what he can bring on the offensive side. He is absolutely a step behind in quickness and people will blow by him on the perimeter at this level, so we'll have to stick him at the 4 most of the time, and even then only against "paint-oriented" 4s.

If King is asked to defend 2's or 3's, he will be #11 in rotation. in Marty mode.

Too early to tell whether he can guard slower 4's or 5's for a few minutes in a reserve capacity, but I really doubt he can guard anyone very well on the perimeter this year.

One thing he can definitely do is give Duke defenders the experience of having to guard a sharp shooter in practice.

It's kinda obvious the general public cannot get into Wilson Rec. Center. Of course, somebody a students age could sneak in or a Duke employee. Trust me, when the staff returns from the recruiting road, they'll shut them off to the best of their ability. I've already heard of some folks being upset for a report on Taylor King that got way too personal in that it described events that were suppose to be private in ridiculous detail - Enquirer stlye. Before you all wonder what the? In short, it was nothing more than passion in the heat of battle. The reason these became closed is people put out a bit too much on the internet after hearing about them - especially in public forums. IMO, the RA for the freshman should think before he/she is to dole out information. They should at least clear it with team officials.

just curious...the K Academy Camp is going on July 25-29, will pickup games be open then? Why would they close them all of a sudden?

Tangentially related: Not quite a pickup game, but I went to a summer league game over the weekend at Georgetown. Deron Washington of VaTech was playing on one of the teams with several Hoya players. He is off-the-charts athletic, and had two spectacular blocks as well as an array of impressive offensive moves.
