Cbs has been promoting this pretty heavily, but maybe folks here have stopped watching. At least it should take your mind off all the unc this and uconn that.

UNC is out and then the inspiring Bob Hurley Sr. piece on St. Anthony, I can now enjoy the rest of the tournament. BTW: I felt compelled to make a donation on the St Anthony website after the 60 min piece and challenge fellow DBR members to do the same. This high school and the Hurley's have an incredible mission and they have certainly left their mark on the history of Duke basketball.

What Hurley does for that school and its kids, and the sacrifices he has made to help make it happen, is nothing short of incredible. I have always had as much respect for him as any coach, on any level.

Here is a link to his HOF induction speech where he is accompanied by K:

It was a great segment. I particularly enjoyed how happy Coach Hurley looked when Bobby was talking about how much harder he was on him and his brother.

I did not know much about Hurley, Sr. before this piece. It was most amazing to me how dedicated he is to mentoring high school kids, to the extent that he has no regrets about not taking his coaching skills to the college level. Loved seeing the nuns praising him. He's quietly made a difference in the life of many kids who otherwise may have had very different futures.

Thank you for posting this. I went on and made a donation. After all, Bobby Hurley is the reason I became a Duke fan and for the last 21 years, it has brought me great joy.

If you all enjoyed the 60 minutes interview, I recommend everyone see the documentary "The Street Stops Here". You can stream it off Netflix instantly. Great doc about Hurley, St. Anthony's, and their 2008 National High School Championship season.

That reminds me, can someone explain how this "national high school championship" thing works? Is there an actual tournament or is it just based on USA Today or some other ranking? Who selects the teams, and what are the criteria (eg must be state champion, what level of play etc)? As I recall from yesterday's piece, St. A's played another New Jersey team to win this putative national championship.

I'm completely ignorant here.

It isn't really a national championship. Just #1 rated at end of year by USA Today and other publications. There is the ESPN RISE High School Tournament each year at the end of the year, but not all high schools are eligible to participate. St. Anthony's was ranked #1 at the end of 2008 and this year, as well as a few other times I believe.
