Does anyone have good recordings of any of the Grateful Dead shows at Duke? Dates listed below. I'm sure recordings are out there and thought this would be a decent place to start.

archive.org is a fantastic repository of live bootlegs. You can have a lot of fun browsing around the catalog on that site. And a lot of the bootlegs end up being pretty good quality. They have a 3 1/2 hour show that Robert Randolph did at Mishawaka Amphitheater that's one of my favorite "albums".

Agreed, though '71 was the best IMO. '76 was nothing special.

Agree about the "76 concert, but camping out for the tickets was great.....we all broke into the pool break for a skinny dip

My bro in law had one from Cameron he played for me. Unfortunately Jerry's mic was not turned on for about the first three or four songs...what a bummer!

Good legs, and yes, '71 was a special show...but aren't they all.

I was living in House CC (when it was across from the tennis courts) for the '82 concert, back before the dorms had locks. A rather interesting crowd invaded for a few days, using our bathrooms, watching our tv, dealing drugs, what have you...

A good time, though - they were harmless. But it was odd.

I think the boys enjoyed playing at Duke from what I overheard backstage in '76, and it was no coincidence they played here 4 times in 8 years. I believe this was more than anywhere else in NC during the time.

I guess you would have noticed if Bill Walton was among your visitors?

Bill reportedly attended more Grateful Dead concerts (650+ according to him) than the number of NBA games in which he played. Amazing.

Bill reportedly attended more Grateful Dead concerts (650+ according to him) than the number of NBA games in which he played. Amazing. He's such a superfan, in fact, that he was the first inductee into the Grateful Dead Hall of Honor (http://www.billwalton.com/espn-column-archive/grateful-dead). I also used to love hearing him pepper his commentary with Dead references and lyrics; for example, I recall a time or two when he responded to a forceful blocked shot with "I'm gonna tell you how it's gonna be!" Sadly, however, ESPN put the kibosh on that a while back (http://www.thesportsrag.com/008_Bill_Walton.html) (incidentally, that piece is pretty hilarious, though fake...although Bill does seem to have cut down on his Dead refs in recent years). Even Bill's son Luke has a Grateful Dead tattoo (http://www.luminousnuminous.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/tattoo-edit.gif). There also used to be Bill Walton Dead t-shirts, featuring skeletons in each of his NBA uniforms, but the Google seems to suggest that they are no longer available.
I hate that I came along too late for the Dead in Cameron. I love both, and to experience them at the same time would have been quite an experience.

Yea, I was in law school at Duke in 1982 and I can distinctly remember the "deadheads" showing up about five days before the concert date, wandering around campus, using the showers in the dorms, rumored to be trying to score some drugs and extra tickets to the concert, etc. It was a total throwback to the 1960's, as many of them had the long hair, tie-dyed t-shirts, run-down VW vans, etc. from that era. I can remember many of the preppier, more mainstream Duke students looking upon them with an air of amusement and bewilderment, as they partly invaded the campus. I never actually heard about any bad stuff happening, though, and I'm sorry to say that I did not go to the concert.

I actually got paid to work the Dead show in 82. There was a temporary student labor pool for special events, and oversized people like me were good at keeping the flower children on the floor from twirling themselves backstage into mischief. I also got to work the Go-Go's (Belinda Carlisle was a chunky little thing), but chose to pay my hard-earned cash to see Neil Young from the stands. Cameron is a good place to see shows and I hope they bring a few in once or twice a year...

Hopefully you didn't wind up on video for that one.

Too bad it was about 10 years before my time on campus.

The youtube posters have some speculation about what made Jerry so giddy, but I think it was the magic of Cameron!
