Just got this email.

"Former Duke baseball and basketball great Dick Groat, who led Duke to its first College World Series appearance, was voted into the 2011 induction class of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.

Groat, a two-year letterwinner for the Duke baseball squad in 1951 and 1952, is the first Duke player to receive the Hall of Fame nod. A two-time first team ABCA All-America selection, Groat posted a career batting average of .375 during his two seasons at Duke and led the Blue Devils to their first College World Series appearance in 1952.

Other members of the 2011 Hall of Fame induction class are Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona, outfielder, Arizona; Danny Goodwin, catcher, Southern University; Dick Groat, shortstop, Duke; Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones, coach, Grambling State; Oddibe McDowell, outfielder, Arizona State; L.A. Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach, first baseman, Cal State Fullerton; and Bill Wilhelm, coach, Clemson.

Also a two-time All-Southern Conference choice, Groat led Duke in hits during both of his seasons and also in doubles, home runs, RBI and stolen bases in 1952. As Duke’s starting shortstop that year, his bat and glove led Duke to a then-school-record 31 wins, its second straight Southern Conference Championship and a trip to Omaha, Neb., where the Blue Devils defeated Oregon State 18-7 before falling to Penn State and Western Michigan."

That is wonderful news; Dick Groat is "one of the great ones," and in really meaningful ways that are FAR more important than athletic achievements alone.
